The Silk Road to Depravity

in #freewrite8 years ago

The other day I was watching a documentary about The Silk Road. It came up when I was looking for a documentary about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

Every time they talk about The Silk Road they always talk about the horror of people buying heroin and cocaine over the web with just a click. Because that's so bad. They download an app, set it up, and figure out how to go to a special site on the "Dark Web" and then they buy some drugs with cryptocurrency and it gets delivered to their house.

Of course, the admin that gave his address to the fed that triggered the fall of The Silk Road was called "chronicpain" if I remember correctly.

Why would someone call themselves chronic pain? Could it perhaps be that they were a sufferer of chronic pain? Something that might make you have to take quite a large amount of painkillers, many of which are opioids, just like that heroin that they always bring up every time they're demonizing The Silk Road. Opioids that were pushed by the same doctors that they force you to get permission from to get any medication, who caused a massive addiction in America because they listened to the drug makers rather than doing their due diligence. Those doctors hold the keys to all the legal drugs in America.

Someone who suffers from chronic pain might grow tired of having to ask a doctor for permission to get a drug to help them with their pain. Perhaps being questioned endlessly and perhaps not even believed because some others use the drugs recreationally. Maybe they just want to pay the money and get the drug they need for their comfort. Just pay the money and get whatever you want delivered to your house without them questioning or judging you. They don't ask you why you're taking so many pills when you're actually just trying to not feel like you're having a panic attack from the pain.

But what about the children!

With just the use of a credit card from your absentee parent and some time on the computer while they're ignoring you and you too can buy whatever drug you want.

Yes, it's all the fault of some random guy over the internet. He gave them what they ordered and what they paid for, rather than listening to some fat old guy writing laws, telling you what you can and can't do with your own life. It's not the fault of the parents for not even fucking paying attention to the kid and letting them fall into a place where they're buying hardcore drugs off the internet.

We need to be there to stop people from letting themselves fall into depression and drug addiction...but we need to stop fighting this war on drugs with terror and imprisonment. We need to get help to people who need help and before they end up on drugs and in a horrible place. If they want to just order something on the internet though, we probably aren't going to be able to stop that without violating people's rights to the extreme. Why can't we instead make sure they get help before they fall, rather than keeping them from getting a drug they want after they've already fallen?

I couldn't agree more. A lot of folks think the war on drugs needs to end, and I agree when it comes to criminal prosecution... but I think that in some ways there can be a more noble "war on addiction" that we can fight through education and outreach. We could help people overcome their addictions, promote harm reduction, and help people to avoid forming addictions in the first place.

I almost said something about dealing with the addiction but I know even before they become addicted, it's often because there's already a problem that's often being ignored. I wrote this after watching the newish documentary on Amy Winehouse. She had a problem way back before she even became famous. Everyone just dismissed it. Or rather, they dismissed every sign.

If we are ever to become a society we dream about in our fiction books, we need to start caring about people, and not ignoring them when there's clearly a problem.

One word. FREEDOM!
