Achievement3 by @gbenga01 Task: Content Etiquette
Today I am applying for Achievement 3: "Content Etiquette."
In this achievement, I have learnt about plagiarism, and I will be sharing the knowledge I gained and my understanding about it. Additionally, i also learnt about the importance of citation when using someone else's work, either words or images.
What is Plagiarism
In today's world, plagiarism is real and rampant than we can imagine, some people engage in it out of ignorance but some fully understands it and still do it anyways.
“Plagiarism is an act of using someone else's intelligence work, ideas, or words without giving due credit by providing the source of the idea, work, or words through citations.”
The world evolves everyday so does the form plagiarism evolves, their are different types/forms of plagiarism, which I will be mentioning below;
Types of Plagiarism:
Direct Plagiarism: This involves directly copying and using text from someone else without giving credit to the person or source. For example, copying a paragraph from a website and using it in personal school essay without giving credit to the source.
Mosaic Plagiarism (Patch Writing): This is probably the most popular form of plagiarism since more light has been shining on plagiarism. This is when someone edit or twist someone else work while keeping some of the original work to make it look new without citing the original work.
Accidental Plagiarism: Like I said earlier that plagiarism can be caused by ignorance. I myself have found myself using other people work without citing in the past, because I didn't know it was wrong. Plagiarism can occur out of ignorance and oversight during the process of executing the work.
Credit Plagiarism: This form of plagiarism mostly occur between boss and workers or master and his students. This is failing to give credit to a collaborator or partner who contributed significantly to a work or project. Solely taking credit for a research work or project without giving due credit to a partner, student, intern who participated in the success of the project.
Ways To Avoid Plagiarism:
There are various effective ways to avoid plagiarism:
Plagiarism Checker Tools:
There are lots of tools online now to check for plagiarism and originality of works now unlike before.
Being Original:
This is probably as straightforward as it gets, being original with one's work, and avoiding other people work either in research, writing or projects.
Use of Citation:
This is giving proper credit by providing the source of a data, sentence, words or inspiration to a particular work or project.
A lot of measures has been put in place to tackle plagiarism but I want us to know that this threat is upon all of us, and we all must fight it, by creating awareness, reporting any case and avoiding in partaking in plagiarism.
