Rhodesian Man... well at least for a short while.

In 1921 a skull was found in the Broken Hill mine in Kabwe, in Zambia (once known as Northern Rhodesia) and was first classified as Homo rhodesiensis.

This guy turned out to be a bit of a classification hot potato.

Due to the robust features of the skull some considered it the African Neanderthal. But enough links to modern humans were found to deny that association. He then had a turn as Homo sapiens arcaicus and Homo sapiens rhodesiensis.

To add to his identity crisis I wonder where he got the sweets?

The skull has cavities in ten of the upper teeth and is considered one of the oldest known occurrences of cavities. Pitting indicates significant infection before death and implies that the cause of death may have been due to dental disease infection or possibly chronic ear infection -

The main consensus now is that Homo rhodesiensis is the African representative of Homo heidelbergensis, a direct ancestor of anatomically modern humans.
