If only we looked as glorious in old age, death and decay as a dying star.
These are called planetary nebulas, less spectacular than their short lived than and more famous supernova bigger brothers.
It is the fate of our sun and other suns of similar size. As they age and start nearing their end instead of going out with a bang they slowly start to let go and shed their outer layers. Gradually expanding to fill the entire space of their solar systems. The neighborhood of their birth.
