Americans Spent $318 MILLION on CHIPS to Celebrate "Freedom" for 4th of July

in #til7 years ago

Values are seriously skewed in the United States of America.

For just one little example,

Three Hundred and Eighteen MILLION DOLLARS!!!

Spent on chips! This isn't something that adds value to the Earth. In fact, if we consider the distribution, packaging, and taxation that went into making this product available to consumers, the corporate profits in no way reimburse the real cost to our planet.

Do you know how many ecovillages we could build for $318 million? And how many families we could feed for free, house for free, clothe for free, and educate for free from that base investment? The amount of real good we can create with $318 million vs. the amount of utility derived from $318 million in chips redefines value.

We're not against chips--they're delicious!

We are calling attention to values and awareness to what shopping at stores really supports.

Consumerism is not freedom!

It's amazing that the things that seem so "normal" in our society are really dysfunctional activities that don't create any value at all. Ooohh...just imagine if we all really put our time, energy, money and devotion to making the world a better place. What an incredible difference we could make together if we were to focus on being the change. Thanks for the reality check!!

"Normal" activities that don't create value at all, but actually consume value!

Let's look at these things, let's think of these things, and YES let's imagine making the world a better place!!! Thanks for doing it with us, @everlove!!!

When I saw the honest truth, I realized there was nothing else to do!!! Live for VALUES!!

I sat here looking at your response for a couple of minutes thinking over several false starts to try to express what is in effect my agreement.

Something is wrong.

One side screams about the US being mistreated in trade agreements, but are they willing to change their tastes to favor quality over quantity in order to favor local producers? It takes time and planning and the willingness to cook.

Another side is screaming about observing 200 different genders while at the same time their favored politician can be complicit in laying sovereign nations in smoking ruins.

it feels like somehow we have trained ourselves to look at some incredibly small range of issues directly in front of our noses to the exclusion of EVERYTHING else. It feels like an almost religious certainty over one's views rather than something can evolve.

I am almost beginning to support the idea of apathy. After all, what else would be the opposite of zealotry? ;-p

So you are saying chips should be cheaper?, or that people should not buy that much?

Not our style to tell anyone what they should or should not do. We're here to remind people that we can do anything, but we can't do everything.

For the same amount/volume of $$$, Americans could consume a large quantity of chips which includes packaging, pollution, and taxation, OR they could build a sustainable ecosystem that supports literally thousands of people for their rest of their lives. OR there are countless other options within the realm of infinity that could play out for that same volume of $$$.

If one spends their resources on option A, then they are voting that it is more important than option B...that's the reality. Most people are choosing to consume, and they may not even realize alternatives exist that create more lasting happiness for more people.

We're inviting people to take a look at that, because we want to see a real revolution in value(s).

This is an invitation to change that I'd gladly accept. Been spending a lot of time looking at our behaviours and trying to make postive changes... the impact of we all did a little would be HUGE.

Isn't getting to decide what I want to spend my hard earned money on an excercise of my freedoms? Whether or not I want to spend it on a bag of chips or an investment in an eco village.

I get it though, my values are screwed up, I should be excercising my freedoms more charitably 100% of the time.

You are totally right!
U get to do whatever you want with your money, time or UPvote!
Its up to you, @gardenofeden is simply making a case for why we live the way we do and hoping to educate and maybe inspire some people. We don't judge, just live steadfast to our ideals of which include helping people and the world every day!

That is pretty pathetic, considering all the good that could be done with that money.

We can offer a lot more value for the same amount!

We can feed a WHOLE healthy and SUSTAINABLE meal for the same price of one bag of chips......

on chips? haha. If everyone gave the money that they spent for the chips to the charity, it was better! Who's with me?

We're living it, @ralphhovsepian! We stand with you!

This never ceases to amaze me. $318 million on chips for just one day could fund entire countries for years...

This is hair raising! Chips is a type of junk food that causes addiction and poisons our body with sodium-glutamate and other additives. This is a big business for food producers and the pharmacy industry. Besides,
even so expensive. From the amount a bag of chips costs, you can buy healthy food. Its packaging is plastic, which never breaks down, and cannot be recycled. Do not even talk about brainwashing ads...

Exactly! Seems so obvious doesn't it......

Do you know how many ecovillages we could build for $318 million? And how many families we could feed for free, house for free, clothe for free, and educate for free from that base investment?

Well said man. I had the same thoughts today after reading that someone won the Burger Contest because he could eat plenty of Burger in a short amount of time... What a sad and senseless activity...

Eating contest is a very sick thing. Some people get sick by gobbling while many are starving.

hahahahahahaha oh boy!
