Sounds Like Garage Rock, From The KINKS!!! (Twin Spin - 2 Rare Songs!)

I think everyone has heard of The Kinks! You know "You Really Got Me" and "Lola" and "Come Dancing" but they had many other songs that are lesser known.

Some say they helped create the Garage Rock sound when they started in 1964 and its true that many Garage Rock bands copied their power chord structure which we find in "You Really Got Me" (later covered by Van Halen) and "All Day and All of the Night". But Garage Rock is also about a catchy lead guitar riff. You may not know it but The Kinks innovated here too!

Have a listen to "Time Will Tell" by The Kinks. I'm not sure if this was released when first recorded but since the tracks on the Picture Book box set are mostly in chronological order and this song is on Disc One, I assume it's 1964 or 1965.

The song starts with the fuzzy lead guitar riff probably played by Dave Davies. Then Ray Davies starts the vocals on top of a very simple drum and bass background with that lead riff popping up between verses. It's notable that the music moves to a higher key twice. The second time occurs after the 2 minute mark and Ray finds it is past the top of his range as his voice cracks twice.

Let's go back to 1966 and hear one more by The Kinks!

1966 was the main year for Garage Rock. The Kinks had already given us power chords and fuzzy riffs by slicing an amplifier speaker. This song, "Till the End of the Day" hit the US airwaves just in time for the start of Spring in 1966. It is very similar to "You Really Got Me" and "All Day And All of The Night" but didn't chart as high so you may not have heard it!
