7 must read novels before you die.

in #novel9 years ago

I’ve read many novels; very few of them reached the status of “must-reads.” But, for better or worse, here is my short list:

1.To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Simply, the best book ever written by an American author.

2.Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Many authors have tried dark humor as a satirical tool. Vonnegut is one of few that succeeded.

3.The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. A great commentary on the times in which it was written.

4.Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. According to Bradbury, the temperature at which paper in books starts to burn is 451 degrees F. You can get the plot of the book from that.

5.The Catcher In The Rye by JD Salinger. Holden Caulfield is a great example of a flawed protagonist.

6.A Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle. I’m a mystery writer, so a mystery had to be in here somewhere. Sherlock Holmes is the best fictional detective ever created, period.

7.The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. The most recent book on this list. I find books are very powerful if it takes me a while to start another book because the characters of the book I just finished were so strongly developed that I have a hard time leaving them. This is a book like that.

Looking back at this list, it’s interesting that more than half of them were banned at some point in time, and one of them (that was banned) is actually about book banning and burning….

You got me interested in a couple I never read - Farenheit 451 and the Poisoned Bible I read Catcher in the Rye and Adventures of Huck Finn. Thought about reading To Kill a Mocking Bird, but never got to it. Thanks for the list - interesting reading your take.
