The Nigerian Manifesto (4) - Stop Medical Tourism

Comrades, to say that the health sector in Nigeria needs critical attention is to say the very least. Every day, thousands are dying on our hospital beds and many more are on the death row for curable diseases.

The facilities in our hospitals are dilapidated and the health workers have become so used to dead bodies that nothing moves them anymore. Our mortuaries and coffin makers are making more money because the earth is swallowing up more people before their time.

Ironically, comrades, we have one of the highest number of trained physicians in the world. So why are our physicians not healing the sick and rescuing those on the death row? The answer is simple - Nigerian physicians are not treating Nigerians. They flee the country every year in search of greener pastures, in search of lands across the oceans where their labour for humanity will be duly rewarded.

While the health sector in Nigeria progresses backwards by the day, our politicians fly to Europe and India to treat headaches. While those admitted for malaria in our hospital sleep in darkness and in the company of mosquitoes, our politicians fly their dogs abroad for medical check ups. These and many other factors have left our health facilities in ruins.

The manifesto for a new Nigeria, comrades, must therefore abolish medical tourism. If a sickness fighting a Nigerian who is resident in Nigeria cannot be treated in Nigeria, let the bearer die with it. This will force our politicians, who dearly love their lives, to equip our hospitals and pay our health workers what is due. This way, our doctors will remain with us and those in diaspora will come back home.

Comrades, these are tough actions but we have to take them to prevent a situation where the next generation will have to travel to India to have their teeth removed.
