I liked your point of view, but I guess that in Hack n Slashes (or whatever they call them these days) most things boil down to taste. For me, for instance, the absence of PvP will never be a problem, because I will never play PvP in most games, so I look for a game that has mechanics that I like and a story or a setting that changes frequently, because, as you said: killing things, collecting loot. I like to think that everybody has a "reference" hack 'n' slash, one that is used as a comparison for all the others. To most people it's Diablo 2, that's why Diablo 3 has disapponted so many. To me it was Titan Quest, and now with Grim Dawn I can say I still love the mechanics after 10 years. Truth is, this stuff never gets old, trying to change it too much can be harmful in the end.
Uh, and exchanging stuff with other players takes away the joy of looting. Hack n Slash 101.
I don't have a huge problem with Diablo 3 either.
It was far from perfect originally, and Real Money Auction House was a terrible idea for a lot of reasons.
But after Reaper of Souls, I really think Diablo 3 has been in a good place.
I don't want to play PvP in these games either (basically I don't think this style of game is skill-based, so PvP is silly), and generally I just play the story and never bother with the end game.
But last year I got convinced to try the end game in Diablo 3 and had some friends boost me to max level and a decent paragon level.
It was actually kinda fun, and I can see why people enjoy that hunt for the perfect gear set.
But I do think it's a huge problem that the cool stuff lies behind hours and hours of grind.
YEp. But that's exactly the thing with PvP - you have to own the "perfect gear". In these games I've never really tried to find a specific piece of equipment, always doing the best with what I found, and as long as you go single player and you're kinda skilled (sometimes skill matter!) you can survive without it.
Have you tried Path of Exile?
That seems to be meant to be sort of a continuation of the concepts in Diablo 2.
Yes. The way skill gems work in Path of Exile was the original concept for skill runes in Diablo 3, sadly they chocked at the end and went the simple route.
Path of exile is indeed pretty cool. I loved what they did with the ability tree. Some very nice concepts there!
