Sony Discusses the Playstation 5

in #gaming6 years ago

In recent days, news and speculation has erupted about the potential development of the next-gen console. With Playstation 4 and Xbox One revolutionising the potential for gaming, eyes are turning to see what more is in store for the gaming world.

In a recent interview with The Financial Times, Sony President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida discussed the possibility of a next-gen console. Yoshida confirmed that there are plans for a successor. While not referring to it as the Playstation 5, he claimed that new, next-gen hardware was "necessary".

However, it is unlikely that we will see any official statements or reveals on the Playstation 5 for a while. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Sony Interactive CEO John Kodera said that the Playstation 5 would not be seen until "at least 2021".

However, other sources have predicted that the Playstation 5 may be seen much sooner. Gaming industry analyst, Hideki Yasuda, claimed that the PS5 could arrive as soon as the final quarter of 2019.

While it is conceivable that the Playstation 5 could arrive late next year, 2021 seems more likely. The Playstation 4 has a lot left to give and it's lifespan does not seem anywhere near over as continuous updates come in. Not to mention there is a rollout for new features coming in the first quarter of 2019. With updates for the Playstation 4 still in development, this may indicate that the Playstation 5 is still a few years away.

Looking back at the releases of former consoles, they tend to be between 6-8 years apart. With the Playstation 4 being released back in 2013, it is a fair assessment that the Playstation 5 will be seen around 2020, 2021 or beyond.

There are no doubts that the Playstation 5 will be an enormous project for Sony. Google also testing the limits of browser gaming with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey being playable on Chrome. This highlights how competition for consoles has raised significantly in recent years. The mobile gaming market is also worth over $70 billion globally.

For companies like Sony and Microsoft, pressure is rising for consoles to outperform more simplistic modes of gaming, like mobile gaming and, recently, browser gaming. Browser gaming does not yet pose too much of a threat. Input lag and graphics lower the standard of gaming, but it is expected to be commonplace within years.

With so many sources of competition arising, how can the next-gen console compete? Backward compatibility and cross-platform play are obvious answers and big desires for gamers.

The next-gen console has a lot to compete with. Can console gaming go much further? Or does the future of gaming lie in the cloud?
