I have not tried any of these games, but these games looks like story based games, which I like.
These games looks similar to games made by RPG Maker, just with anime style.

Yes! There are many great tools for developing visual novels, but Ren'py is notable because it's free and highly customizable. I doubt Dan Salvato could've pulled the kind of tricks in Doki Doki Literature Club with any other visual novel developing tool.
