7 Things We Miss About Maple Story

in #gaming6 years ago

Maple Story is a very cute-looking online side-scrolling 2D game (or it used to be). Perhaps many of us have played it before when we were kids years ago. Despite the crappy graphics, we loved it a lot and we made online friends from it. We no longer play Maple but we thought about it, hence the post.

Have you guys played Maple Story before? Do let us know in the comments below!

Here are 7 things we miss about Maple Story. To clarify, these features might still be around but we just miss them!

1. Party Quests (PQ)

Who can forget the super awesome party quests? The Kerning PQ was legendary and there were lots and lots of players crowding there each time. Every party leader had to rush and click to enter the PQ once the team inside comes out. It was a game of who was the fastest clicker!

Hence, the introduction of auto-click bots! Everyone started using auto-click to stand a chance to enter the PQ.

Why the rush for PQ? Because of the experience points you can gain inside. Furthermore, Maple Story is super fun when playing in a group. There'll always be troublemakers so it won't be boring at all. There are other PQs as well, i.e. Henesys, Ludibrium, Orbis and so on. We used to listen to Fort Minor while doing PQs the entire day! Crazy isn't it?

Given the chance, we would love to turn back time and play Maple Story (the old version) all over again. Do you guys miss PQs already?

2. Boss fights

Who wouldn't like boss fights? A great game is one with lots of fun things to do and boss fights are one of them.

There are various bosses in Maple Story, but the older ones are Balrog and Zakum, followed by Scarlion, Horntail, Papylatus, Pink Bean and so on. Our personal favorite was Zakum and it wasn't open to just anyone.

We had to complete a super hard jump quest that would make you pull your hair out! It was super, super frustrating but once you're done with it, you could fight Zakum at anytime, provided no one else was fighting.

How many of you loved boss fights as well? They were pretty challenging especially when our levels were still low, but Zakum became an easy boss when new ones came up, and when 4th job was introduced. It's a shame really. Maple Story was so much fun back then.

3. Free Market

Free Market is the area where we traded goods and services with other players in Maple. Surprisingly, the free market can be pretty fun. Everyone's like spamming their stuff. For e.g. "B> steelix for 10m mesos" or "S> pink bean chair for 20m mesos". It was pretty hilarious and since the game is 2D, we had to ensure our message wasn't blocked by others standing on the same area!

It's like we're all sharing this screen and we had to find our own space to broadcast our trades. Maple then introduced shops that you can set up, but they're bought with real money. Shops allow you to sell your stuff without you being online and manually broadcasting stuff. They were really convenient but you had to spend your own money.

One awesome thing is that Free Markets are generally areas with no monsters and hence you won't die. The funny thing is, sometimes the game master would appear and summon plenty of monsters, resulting in so many deaths! When you die your character becomes a ghost until you click the respawn button. Those who were AFK (away from keyboard) would still be ghosts and they looked super funny!

4. Henesys Training Ground

For some reason, we remembered this pretty well. Henesys is an area with low level monsters, and it's near where you start your game. Basically, you train at Henesys when you're a newbie.

And also for some reason, a lot of high level characters love to loiter around this map! Even we did when our character was already 4th job. Most of us love to kill-steal (KS) low level noobs and show off our high level attacks. The fun part is when all of the "pros" start ks-ing each other. It's like a bloodbath but in a fun way!

Some skills like blizzard and genesis attacks the entire freaking map, so when a few high level players start doing that, it becomes chaotic!

5. Friends!

This is perhaps one of the most important part of the game. Online games are best played with friends, and you can actually make a lot of friends playing Maple Story!

Granted, there will be lots of people online claiming to be someone they're not, but you don't have to actually meet up with them. Some of them became our real friends on Facebook. Some were school friends and we connected better online.

With friends, you can create and join guilds, do party quests, train together, trade with each other, teach each other skills and tricks, help each other to complete quests and so much more.

6. Early morning grinds

Yes, we loved waking up 7 am in the morning to grind! All for the sake of leveling up! Those were crazy days and sleepless nights but they were fun. Unlike going to school those days, we actually enjoyed waking up early in the morning.

Some of the maps that are great for grinding are always full. Hence, we had to wake up early to book a spot and start training. Nasty players will come and start ks-ing, but we were good most of the time.

7. Cute faces

This is probably one of the main things we loved about Maple Story. The super cute faces you can make! Just use F1 - F7 for different emotions and they made the game much better. Of course, they introduced cash items where you can buy different expressions, but they required real money.

In fact, many items required real money as time passed. Totally understood that since they're a business anyway. If you're one of those cash-less players, F1 - F7 were the best!

What other things did you guys miss?

There were so many things that we did not include in this post, so what do you guys miss or love about it? Or are you still playing Maple Story?

If there are two things that we missed from the past, it's Maple Story and Bitcoin at less than a dollar.

Thanks for reading!
