Where's One Solution, There Are More!

in #quick-solutions6 years ago (edited)

The only conditions are to be aware there's a problem and to care enough to look for the solutions.

A few people started noticing and writing about the fact we have a trending page with many posts about burning STEEM or fixing the SBD peg and that it isn't normal. I'm sorry for not mentioning any names, I don't really know where it all began.

Following that I created a poll, to see if people support or not a few major actions that are currently "trending":

  • burning STEEM
  • fixing the SBD peg (sbdpotato initiative)
  • sending beneficiary rewards or SBD to @steem.dao (Steem Proposals System account)
  • the high threshold of the Return Proposal for SPS

I haven't expressed my position on any of the topics yet, but I thought it would be a good time to do it.

Other people may view the same actions with different eyes or from a different perspective than myself and that's ok.

About burning STEEM and fixing SBD peg I have the same opinion: they are just band aids. We're playing with inflation hoping that markets will give us some slack. The only real solution regarding the price will come from the markets, when there will be a high enough demand, maybe following some of our much expected releases from the beginning of this year.

So I am not in favor nor against them. Well, slightly against, but only if we come up with a real solution instead.

About sending SBD or beneficiary rewards to steem.dao, I'm all for it. The bigger the fund, the more we can do with it, the more developers and other entrepreneurs we can attract with it.

The threshold of the return proposal is too high in my opinion. Even if the reasoning for keeping it high may be to have an aggregated effect to help fix the SBD peg, I believe we can't protect an asset by not using it, especially when it funds development primarily.

That's it about the poll and my own answers.

Let's return to the trending page, and immediate solutions people came up with.

I noticed @ acidyo wrote a post yesterday asking people to set 10%-20% beneficiary to @sbdpotato, saying that if enough people would do that, maybe there won't be a reason for sbdpotato to exist at all in the future:

Sbdpotato itself came with a temporary solution to reduce their impact on the trending page, in an attempt to "self-police" the trending page: :)

@quochuy worked on an update to steemit.com which will be pushed by Steemit, Inc. on the main site after they take a look at it, which will allow any author to limit the payout it receives on a post. What does it mean? Well, instead of denying payout, you simply set a max amount above which the post won't receive in author rewards. Here's his post from earlier today:

By far the most elegant solution for the looks of the trending page so far, especially for a visitor, is the one implemented by SteemPeak. I described it yesterday, by updating my post when I discovered their implementation partially matched one of my proposals for a solution to the trending page:

Here's one of the screenshots from Steempeak from yesterday, so that people can see it as a thumbnail too. :)

I've set the following beneficiaries on this post:
@steem.dao - 25%
@steempeak - 15%
@sbdpotato - 10%

Sort:

Well I just got an education.

Oh my, thank you. Thanks for reading my post in the first place! :)

I try to everyday. Just reading that one made me realize how much there is to learn on Steem.

I still find new things to learn on Steem... So, yep, never a boring day. :)

Both solutions suck from my point of view, and the only solution is when enough people will come to steem ecosystem.

You mean the quick fixes for not showing SBDPotato and STEEM Burn posts on the trending page? I agree with you. :)

On steem, the hot topic change rapidly and fast! ;)

I like the Hot page even less than the Trending page, although posts of mine made it on both at occasions (I know the Steem retrospective made it to trending, after a dozen or more other posts).

Hot page is based on receiving quick votes and interactions (enough to make it on Hot). Auto-votes from big players are the key words here, generally. A post will only stay up the hot page for a max of a few hours, regardless of the votes and interactions it gets.

To be honest, I almost never check the trending page on Steemit because most of the content is almost useless.

I wouldn't say useless, but the content I'm interested in is most often on my feed. Trending or Hot rarely offer me something insightful beyond the feed, that is also in my area of interests.
