The rarest or strangest console and video game controllers

Since the appearance of the first controller in the history of video games with the Magnavox Odyssey, there have been an infinite number of forms of these peripherals, which have evolved over the years until reaching the present day. However, there have been some controllers whose characteristics were strange or shocking at the time of their launch.

The companies that develop consoles and peripherals have always tried to persuade the user in different ways, one of them is the design of the controller, for that reason we can find several of these that are a little strange, since they tried in a certain way to stand out among all the others.

Nintendo has been one of the companies that has had a great weight in the evolution of the controllers, formerly the controls of the consoles had the particularity of having one or two buttons and a great joystick in the central part, something very similar to the Arcade machines, but Nintendo including the D-pad would change everything, becoming a reference for other companies.

Next, I will show you some controllers that were somewhat strange or odd when they were released, taking into account certain factors such as their shape or button layout.

Atari Jaguar

The Atari Jaguar controller is considered by many to be a little outdated for its time, let's remember that its launch was in 1993, at that time there were other controllers like the Super Nintendo or the Sega Mega Drive, but Atari wanted to go further, based on the Sega model, but adding a huge amount of buttons.

If we take into account that the most complete version has a total of 22 buttons, it's simply crazy to think that a video game on a console requires so many functions. Some video games included a label for the central part, identifying what the 12 buttons would do, in short, a rather strange controller.

Apple Pippin

Apple in association with Bandai launched in 1995 one of the rarest consoles on the market called Apple Pippin, it included a controller that tried to revolutionize in some way in video games, including in the center a Trackball, as this console was oriented to a multimedia use.

With Trackball you could control the operating system's mouse pointer more freely, and also apply certain functions for some games. It was a very curious controller that did not see the light of day in the video game industry due to the commercial failure that was the Apple Pippin.

Katana Onimusha 3

In 2004 Onimusha 3 was released, an action-adventure video game developed by Capcom based on the universe of the Samurai. For the Ps2 platform a very special controller was released which was in the shape of a Katana, considered by many to be one of the strangest PlayStation 2 controllers.

This controller included a very primitive motion sensor, nothing like Wii controls. By moving the katana, it sent a signal to PS2 for our character to attack, and no matter which direction we moved the controller, it always made the same movements. In conclusion, it's a collector's item, because playing with it is really uncomfortable.

Sierra Resident Evil 4

When the GameCube was launched in 2001 several people were surprised by the design of its control, but this would be left behind when Capcom designed a special edition of Resident Evil 4, which would include a saw-shaped controller, referring to one of the most iconic weapons held by one of its enemies.

Later Capcom would launch this control for the PlayStation 2, keeping the same form, but changing the buttons for those of the console previously mentioned, besides differentiating them with another color, being the one of the GameCube of yellow color and the one of PS2 of Red color. In spite of having an interesting form many indicate that playing with it is something uncomfortable.

These were some weird or strange controls in the videogame world, if you know one that is worthy of being in this list you can indicate it in the comments section and give us your opinion about it.
