Strange Mario Video Games

in #gaming7 years ago

Undoubtedly Mario is one of the most iconic characters in the world of video games, since its appearance in arcade rooms with the game Donkey Kong in 1981 has won the hearts of many gamers around the world, gaining even more popularity than Mickey Mouse due to its great influence in more than 38 years.

Nintendo, company in charge of the creation and distribution of Mario games, has taken charge of keeping the classic plumber in the line of time, for each console that it launched to the market they developed of 2 or more video games of this character, however, not all of them were excellent games, being forgotten in the past.

Some of these games were tests to guide the plumber to another genre of video games and even third parties made games with the permission of Nintendo, but the results were catastrophic, today I will show you 2 Mario video games which Nintendo does not want to remember.

Mario is Missing!

In 1992 Nintendo wanted to get into the area of education, develop learning-oriented video games did not sound crazy at all, that's how they chose the great plumber and created "Mario is Missing!", a very simple video game where we controlled Luigi in search of his beloved brother.

The story was very simple, Bowser would steal some very valuable artifacts from a museum which belonged to certain historical places in different countries, apart from kidnapping Mario so he wouldn't stop his plans, this is when Luigi with Yoshi sets to work to undertake his new adventure.

The gameplay was very simple, we practically had to go into the cities and investigate, looking for conversation to the people we met, at certain times we had to answer correctly certain questions about the history of that place, if you answered correctly you would be told the place where Bowser hid the object to return it to the museum.

Despite not being a terrible video game it was not very accepted by the public, having few sales in the market compared with other plumber video games, it even came out for multiple platforms like MS-DOS, Mac, SNES and NES.

Nintendo decided to make a sequel called Mario's Time Machine respecting the same gameplay of Mario is Missing!, but finally realized that they would have no future with this genre of video games and buried this concept to leave it in complete oblivion.

Hotel Mario

In 1991 Philips would get involved in the world of video games with a desktop console called CD-I, however, they needed video games that caught the public's attention. At that time the company had good relations with Nintendo so they decided to apply for a license to create a video game of the famous plumber.

In this way they would create one of the strangest games called Hotel Mario which was released in 1994, being an exclusivity for the Philips video console, attracting the attention of many people, but in its development did not have any supervision of Nintendo, this would bring its consequences.

Hotel Mario is not a bad video game, its gameplay has nothing to do with the platform genre, it was more puzzle oriented, but everyone who bought it expected to see the classic plumber jumping, hitting blocks or eliminating enemies and instead delivered a game where the main objective was just to close doors.

Nintendo was not very pleased to see that final result and decided not to transfer the license to third parties of its famous characters in the future, leaving Hotel Mario as a dark stain of the past that unfortunately many people forgot over the years.
