Municipal art that the taggers leave alone

in #art4 years ago

It's good to see that there is at least some method to the madness as far as the street artists are concerned here in Da Nang, Vietnam. There is a LOT of vandalism here and there is also some street art. I am of the way of thinking that there is a very big difference between street art and vandalism but also at the same time I think that there are certain things that should be off limits even if you are talented with a spray can.

For the most part there seems to be some level of respect in the local community and tagging is mostly done in places where the structures are temporary or in the process of being demolished. To tag something like that I think is fine.

There are certain instances where "stret art has been done in really inappropriate places such as the photo below where someone thought it would be a good idea to tag a war memorial with their shitey callsign.

Thankfully, the perpetrator in that instance was caught and sentenced to 4 years in prison, which is a bit harsh but I think they were trying to make an example out of the dude.

Beach retaining walls are a very popular place for people to vandalize because it is out of sight at night and there are plenty of ways for the perpetrators to retreat should they be spotted. Personally, i am happy when they get caught because that is just awful to ruin public spaces like that.

Here in Danang, there is tons of grafiti and some of it are in areas I consider inappropriate. On the beach, there is a decisive lack of vandalism and I think this creative idea has helped in keeping it that way.

This may look like street art, but it is actually raised tiles and I think it was most likely a prefabricated product that is intended precisely for this situation. I don't know for sure, but it looks a little too "perfect" to be hand crafted.

It's also helpful that it is at least somewhat thematic of where you are at the time: The beach.

I don't know exactly what sort of code exists among street artists but it seems as though everyone has some sort of unwritten law that this sort of thing is off-limits to taggers and for that I am thankful. I find it very upsetting when someone vandalizes property that is not their own, or without permission.

I don't know if the government installed these tiles specifically for this purpose, but if they did do so, it seems to be working. It is also quite nice looking.
