There Might Be Hope

in #esteem6 years ago

Greetings Steemians,

This past week seems to have been a good one for the houseplants.

The Jade plant clippings from the mother that succumbed to fungas gnats are doing ok. Growth seems very slow to non-existent, but they look healthy nonetheless.

The Philodendron now has a grand total of 3 leaves, and really just a mind of its own. It was showing signs that it didn't like the intensity of the LED's, so now it's just chilling under a lamp with dim CFL's and looking happier than ever. It doesn't seem to care for watering more than once per week, and sprouts a new leaf about once a month as of late.

The green onions are doing terrific, and seem as though they would appreciate more intense lighting, as the onions are on the spindly side, but growing quickly and very healthy looking nonetheless.

The fungus gnats have learned their lesson for now and won't come near my plants, but dressing them with fresh cinnamon and keeping hydrogen peroxide on the ready is vital, because they can infest quickly if you're not on top of things.

The plant I am excited about seems to be making a recovery. I'm not 100% sure what the plant is, but I am fairly certain that it is in the Haworthia succulent family. It displays all of the correct distinct characteristics, and closely resembles many plants I've seen during research of this particular breed.

I was overwatering, and the root system completely rotted. I suspected this when the petals went from a bright green, to a dull brown. It appeared to be dying. Sure enough the entire root system was done for.

Luckily there is a bulbous area where the roots originate, and the rot had not set into this area. This to me was an indication that the plant could be saved.

My first thought was "The plant obviously doesn't need water right now." So my idea was to take some bone dry planting medium t(that I made specifically for succulents) and put the plant in it with no water for at least 3 days. After 3 days I gave it a very light watering, and a day later it's showing new green from the base of the petals! I'm not planning to give it any more water for at least a week or two, and the soil is bone dry again already. So I'm feeling good about this.

I have been lucky to get some intense sun through the windows the past couple of days, and felt the succulent would really appreciate the natural light. So it's been soaking up the sun.

Let's have a look:

As you can see, the petals don't have the best color, but they were completely brown, and so the new green is a good sign.

Isn't that amazing? This is a pretty critical time for this plant right now, and there is not much I can do aside from just hoping that it will be alright. Watering right now would be a mistake, of that I'm pretty sure. So I'm just giving it light and doing my best. Hopefully it will make a full recovery.

Here it what it used to look like:

When looking at its previous state, it's quite obvious that the plant is not in a good way right now, but I am hopeful.

Here is an edit just for fun:

I was playing around with filters and coloration effects. This came about with changing up the hue and saturation. To me this looks like it could be from another planet, and maybe a bit bigger with petals that are more like tentacles and move around.

Thanks for stopping by Steemians, I hope you're all having a wonderful day!

Much love,
@futuremind
