(Movie Review) Peter Rabbit 2018

Spoiler Alert- there are some spoilers
This live action version of Peter Rabbit was actually pretty good for a kids film. They did a good job of paying homage to the original stories and characters while also creating a new story and including things that were amusing for both kids and adults. My son loved it and he does not like a lot of stuff. He likes some animated series but he usually hates animated features, won't watch any Disney movies (which is Ok with me) but loves live action movies. This was his first trip to the movie theater and he had a great time. I had a cocktail made by a robot!

The action begins with Peter leading a raid of Mr. McGregor's garden as one might expect, and then Mr. McGregor drops dead. Peter tells his sisters that he killed him and then all the animals go tear up the McGregor Estate. All the kids in the theater loved all the CGI animals wackiness. Which is good because there was a lot of it in the 90 odd minute film. I love how they integrated diegetic music into the film, I won't spoil that for you but it was a great running gag. All the characters from the Potter books are there even Mr. Frog makes a few cameos which is fun.

Anyhow it turns out that Mr. McGregor's long lost nephew is a obsessive compulsive Londoner who works at Harrods department store and everything that you can imagine goes along with that. When he gets passed up for a promotion, he loses it and freaks out which kids also love. I can't imagine many kids got the quip about nepotism but I thought it was funny.

After losing his job he receives the deed to his uncle's house which he endeavors to sell so he can buy his own toy store so he can compete with Harrods. Little does he know that his uncle's neighbor "Bea" (who loves painting rabbits in jackets) is Rose Byrne who is a friend to all the rabbits and animals. Who wouldn't fall in love with her? Of course he comes into hilarious and extensive conflicts with Peter and his sisters and cousin, who are all there and all love blackberries. Think Home Alone but with a CGI rabbit voiced by James Cordon as Kevin.
There was some great moments of reflexivity in this film where they went into, if this was this kind of a movie this would happen, but it's not so this is what happened, pretty awesome. And a few other times where Peter puckishly breaks down the fourth wall reminiscent of Ferris Bueller's Day Off

It was a great film, both cute and sweet with a happy ending but they didn't pull any punches or sugar coat any of the life and death stuff from the original stories. It was risky but I like that.

I would give it 9/10 for the genre of kids films, I wouldn't watch it if I didn't have a child but if you have to sit through a kids film just grab a robot cocktail and give it a go. Note that I like British humor, if you don't care for it or get it and are older than 10 then this will be rough for you.

all the words are mine and all the pictures are labeled as "free to share commercially" thanks for reading, I love up votes comments and resteems, if you are into that sort of thing
