Understanding Special Needs Through A Story

in #steemiteducation5 years ago (edited)

In this age, we are aware of special needs but not everyone can have empathy for special needs.

There are many who may not understand and they may even make critical comments like their parents should lock their special needs children at home.

Below is a touching story of the struggle of a mother who tried to help his special needs son to survive in a world where inclusiveness may still be lacking.

You may need to get some tissue papers when you are watching the below videoclip.

The Struggle As Parents

Through this short videoclip, viewers can experience the struggles of parents with special needs.

They are constantly concerned about the future of their children and how their children can survive when they are no longer around.

There may not be anyone who can love them as much as their parents. Parents are also concerned that their special needs children would be abused when there is no one to protect them.

The videoclip aims to educate the public and nurture empathy in them.

Opportunity

Everyone deserves a chance even for special needs children. In the videoclip, the owner of the café refused to offer the special needs boy a job.

He was extremely impatient and he was rude to both the mother and her boy.

When he found out that the boy’s mother had cancer, he gave the boy the job but he refused to let him help out in the beginning.

The boy tried to prove that he can do the job and the café owner eventually accepted his exceptional memory ability.

Every child may have his talent even for special needs so we should give everyone a chance.

Just like an autistic child, he could be the best worker for jobs that needs to follow a precise routine or procedure without changes.

The Public

As there are more people getting educated and accepting special needs, there would be more empathy rather than sympathy.

Sympathy may not be what they need but they need people to understand and accept them as the way they are.

They want others to include them even though they may be different.

Parents want their children with special needs to be accepted even for enrichment classes or other opportunities.

My younger son with special needs was rejected by an educational centre when he was young.

It was heartbreaking especially for my wife.

I had to teach him personally when he found it hard to understand in school.

The good thing is I am a trained teacher by profession but parents who are not teachers would have lots of struggles in educating their children with special needs.

In Conclusion

This article is not meant to teach you what to do but to raise greater awareness and empathy of the struggles that families with special needs have.

We cannot change the general public but we can do our little part to share our knowledge and awareness about special needs whenever we can.

We can value the talents that these kids may have and get the public to see these talents.
