Hope Builder
In the past, most children attended lessons in schools to acquire knowledge.
Education is an opportunity for some to move out of the generations of poverty with better future job opportunities.
Uneducated parents placed great importance for their children to be educated so that they could have a better life in future.
With more generations getting educated, there were also increase of divorce rate and broken families due to different channels of influences.
Many students come to school with priority for their own social needs.
There are many parents who treat schools as a student care centre where it is a place to keep their children away from home while they can have their own time without their interference.
Education is no longer the priority for many modern broken families as their social needs and financial needs may have clouded them from seeing the importance of education.
Hindrance
As mentioned in my past articles, I am handling a class made up of children from broken families with emotional problems.
My Vice Principal ever mentioned that teachers may just be the hindrance to my students’ personal interest in coming to school.
My students come to school so that they can play and mingle with friends since they lack of the love and attention at home.
Friendship is everything to them and their priority is not learning but play and socialisation.
Having lessons and class assignments are great hindrance to them having fun in school.
Offences
My students are regularly getting into serious fights as well as even the police had to come in to investigate for criminal offences.
I am handling 12-year-old children but the discipline and criminal issues that they are involved in would only happen in secondary schools in the past.
My students may have bad police records but teachers should still aim to educate such children since we are the only possible turning point for them.
We must not judge since we are not a judge but educators.
We must find the diamonds among the stones so that we can discover talents of each child and provide the opportunity to motivate them to the right direction.
Through the discovery of their self-worth and talents, there can be great changes within a short span of time for such children.
Hope
The brutal fact of their family backgrounds can never be changed. Each day they would return home where they do not feel a sense of comfort.
They may see their situations as hopeless with both parents in jail and there is only disgrace and anger for being an existence.
They start to self-harm as a short-term outlet of their emotional needs.
Teachers and guardians of such children must lead them to see that they can create a different future for themselves for not submitting themselves to their current destiny and give up.
By believing in a better future, they can be motivated to learn and be educated so that they can craft their own desired future.
Their destiny is not fixed unless they have given up on breaking away from their current state.
In Conclusion
Education is not a guarantee for a successful future but it can increase the chance of a better future.
Education is not the only way of success as there are many great entrepreneurs who are dropout from schools.
As teachers, we should not work only on head knowledge but we need to focus on character building for our students to cope with their life challenges.
We may not be able to change every child but we do what we can by not giving up on anyone of them.
