Games can improve listening skills and reflex skills

Most of us like games. Children are inclined to play and they can learn a game faster than learning the multiplication tables and past tense.

Getting students to play games can help to build rapport as well as listening skills.

I did a search and there are actually plenty of game ideas online.

We can adapt and make our lesson engaging through games.

Choose the right game with the right approach to reach the desired outcomes.

I have gathered some videoclips for some game ideas for your reference.

Jump in, Jump out

This is an easy game to break the ice for a new class where pupils introduce themselves in a fun way.

From the videoclip, we can see that it provides a great opportunity for everyone to know one another personally.

They can easily identify those with common interest through playing the game.

Walk and Stop

We can start off this game by letting pupils to walk about. Pupils will freeze when we shout ‘Stop!’.

We can have a few rounds of Walk and Stop.

After pupils are comfortable, we can increase the difficult by reversing the instruction.

When we say ‘Walk’, pupils will freeze. When we say ‘Stop!’, pupils will move.

After a few rounds, we can add in more actions like clap, jump, say out their own names etc.

Pass the beat around the room

Our pupils can find it hard to take turns.

This is a great game to get them to learn how to take turns as well as how to coordinate with others.

Each pupil will take turn to say a word from ‘Pass the beat around the room’.

After saying the word ‘room’, pupils will tap their own shoulder.

When pupils are good at it, we can have only one pupil to tap the shoulder after the word ‘room’.

When pupils are comfortable with it, we can eliminate a word.

When it comes to the missing word, the pupil for the missing word can clap or jump.

We can modify the game according to our own creativity.

My Name Your Name Game

This is a useful ice-breaker game especially for a new class.

Pupils get to learn about the names of their new classmates.

By watching the videoclip, the rhythm can be challenging when we are getting them to say their own names while doing the actions.

When they get the rhythm, teachers can change the game a little by getting them to call out the name of a classmate.

In conclusion

There are many researches that indicate the benefits of using games as one form of learning strategies.

There are many games that we can use but it really depends on the expected outcomes that we want.

Getting pupils to play games definitely is a non-threatening way to engage our pupils in a fun way.

The earlier we can get our class to be bonded, the easier for them to work in groups for lesson activities.

I like your thoughts. I kind of missing my childhood when reading your post. It was so much fun back then but who said we can't still do that kind of games even if we're n adult now right?

You are totally right. Nevertheless, due to the stress and expectations of society, not many of us can put down our guards and play heartily!
