Empathy to develop others
Our failures can be the best teaching for others. They are also the best lessons that lead us to success.
As teachers, parents or even co-workers, we can use our past failures as good lessons to build others.
Through our own experience, we can have empathy to develop others positively.
Trust
Regardless of children or adults, trust is the lever for the degree of how much one may share with us.
Without trust, no one will approach us as it may be used against them or become a terrible rumour.
Trust makes the person feel safe as their secrets are safe with you and you will not spread it around.
We may not only have empathy but we must gain trust without judgement so that a person with an emotional issue due to a bad situation can approach us.
Listening ear
There are times when someone is sharing a bad experience or failure but he/she does not really need advice.
This person may just want to vent out the feeling so that he/she can feel better.
In such situation, we can simply provide a listening ear.
After the person feels better, we can just indicate our positive signs of empathy through our body gestures regularly.
In such situation, we may not give advice at that moment. When the person feels better after a few days, we can always talk to the person again.
Use leading questions about how he/she can look at it at a different angle or how it can be a useful lesson that leads to greater future success.
You can also share your own experience on how your failures have led you to greater successes.
It is definitely impactful when a real personal example is shared.
Positive words
It is so easy to say ‘Good Job!’ and ‘Well done!’ but the sincerity may be easily doubted as they are too casual and frequently used.
The power of good positive words can change negative emotions to positive motivations.
Instead of simply saying those casual positive words, it will be great to be specific or even share our own experience if it is something that we can really feel and understand it.
If it is just something good, we should indicate it clearly.
Example: I like the way how you have helped David just now.
If it is a failure, we can share our own personal experience or simply indicate we understand it fully.
Example:
- I know how it feels like as I have experienced it before and it has helped me to … (Indicate how your failure has helped you to be better or successful)
In conclusion
This article will only raise your awareness that your experience can provide empathy to develop others through trust, having a listening ear and positive words.
Your personal stories and experience are definitely impactful examples and how you had used these to build your current successes.
There are still many strategies that you can use and it is great if you can find out more through further readings on how to make good use of your personal failures as models of successes.
The fact is our failures and experience are the ones that make us who we are today.

Character education is so near and dear to my heart. I personally think it is just as important as anything else we teach our students. Young people are inherently egocentric and need coaching and modelling to help learn about empathy. I am a teacher who tries to model empathy and good character for my kids at all times and take any opportunity to find teachable moments.
A good teacher teaches the subject well but a great teacher teaches the child. Teaching a child not just the subject but the ability to handle challenges and other issues. You are definitely a great teacher then.
