Connect Students Using Common Interest
Getting connected with our students does have an important role in motivating them.
This is often a neglected area as teachers do have very limited time with lots of required syllabus to complete.
We would showcase what we think is the best possible way to present a lesson and end the lesson happily thinking it is a good lesson without getting feedback from students.
The truth is what we think is good may not necessarily be the same opinion as our students.
They may not even let us know due to lack of rapport and fear of being scolded.
Below is a cute animated cartoon drew by a part-time youth development teacher for a before-and-after school programme.
She shared about her experience in connecting with her students through her own interest.
I almost skipped her video as she did an advertisement for a certain product but she went on to share about her experience in an entertaining way.
She received a touching card for sharing what she enjoyed doing with her students and they were inspired by her in the end.
Very often, we keep our professional duties as teachers and our own private life separated which is really a good practice.
Getting connected with students by using something we like doing can be a way to show our students that we are just like them but we know how to organize our time to fulfil what is required of us and yet take time to do what we like during our free time.
The need to set good role model but yet being real to students.
Students need to know that no one is perfect so we can get them to realise the reality of life through sharing selective private interest of ours.
We must be selective so that we do not go beyond the boundaries.
