Big Hero 6: Waterolor + digital process

Hello everyone and thanks for checking out another painting. I've been having so much fun doing the watercolor to digital process that I decided to do another one! I'm pretty sure this is going to become the norm for me, haha. One of the benefits I think is that it makes me practice with both traditional and digital techniques, so it's well rounded. Sketch, watercolor, digital, I'm loving using all three!

sketch phase + first wash of color

I missed taking a picture of the sketch this time but you can still see the orange outline underneath the watercolors. At this point I'm really thinking about the lightest lights and colors. I don't want to be too bold about the color choices because I want for there to be some variety in the hues when the painting is finished. Anything I put down here is going to peak through at the end and I want there to be the main color ideas and lighting in place.

Big shape block in

After I've laid the first wash I go in with the major shapes. This is where I can be more bold. I've already laid out the map where I want the lights and color shifts so I can start making those big impact shapes.

Finished watercolor

This one surprised me in that the watercolor actually looks mostly finished at this point. I usually don't get bright highlights or saturated colors with watercolor but I think maybe because I was being very patient the paint I threw down ended up being thicker and more opaque. I like how it came out!

The last step was to take it into digital to refine the shapes and pump the lights. I like the glow that I was able to get in digital and the lighting looked more believable on the characters. Once again this was a super fun process that I think I will probably keep repeating.

Thank you all for looking and thanks a lot to those of you who have commented lately, I really enjoy talking with you and seeing some of your works as well.

I'm glad you've been liking my stuff! I just finished a story book that I'm working on publishing so I've had a lot more time to do fan art and new things, I'm having a lot of fun with the freedom to explore. Big hero 6 was such a wonderfully done movie, I really wanted to pay homage to it. I wonder whats next...

Yes, it was a good one really.
Whatever is up next I'm sure it will be another really good one of yours.
