Mandarin duck families in the West Lake in Hangzhou City now have their own “ID cards,” which are available across the globe.
It is the first time mandarin ducks living in the popular tourist spot of eastern China’s Zhejiang Province has received the banding, as millions of migrant birds are banded every year.
Six mandarin ducks have been banded with the nickel-copper bracelet, with information including the nation and organization of the banding, as well as the bracelet numbers.
Five of them have been installed with GPS, which will send the location and body temperature of the birds to the database every one to two hours.
Authorities from Hangzhou Birds and Ecology Research Institute and Zhejiang Wildbirds Association and National Birds Banding Center are helping in this effort.
