DROWNING ELEPHANT SAVED
I have just heard the sweetest story on the news of an elephant that has been saved after a naval patrol boat spotted it 14km off the northwest coast of Sri Lanka.

The elephant was struggling to stay afloat in the sea. In a video of the incident, the elephant is seen floating in the ocean with its trunk slanted upwards like a submarine's periscope.

A spokesman for the Navy, Mr. Chaminda Walakuluge, told the Straits Times that the animal was most likely trying to cross the Kokkilai Lagoon, a large stretch of water that lies between two areas of the jungle when it got swept out into the ocean. He said: "They usually wade through shallow waters or even swim across to take a short cut. It is a miraculous escape for the elephant."

According to The Mirror, elephants are known to swim up to 46km and are comfortable in the water.

Sri Lanka Navy made a lionhearted rescue effort to save the elephant. Wildlife officials and a group of rescuers, tied a rope around the elephant while others prepared to wind it in. The nerve-wracking 12-hour operation was caught on camera where it shows a member of the Navy in the water, on top of the elephant, tying a rope around the animal. The ship then gently guided the elephant to dry land. NBC 3 Las Vegas reports.

Those guys are brave to be in there with that giant animal.
I take my hat off to people like that. Isn't it fantastic that they care so much about that gentle giant, that they actually risk their lives to save him? The elephant will never forget the heroic effort to save him.

Yes, I am also very grateful for those men who care about the animals, it is such a happy ending. You can just imagine the distress that poor elephant was in.
