Preamble

Let's start a new series on applications gravitating around the Steem blockchain! For this first part we will be particularly interested in frontend applications for computer allowing us to give the food to our beloved blockchain.

When I got here, I was immediately encouraged to use Busy. Everything has been done to direct me towards this frontend. So, as a small plankton that was just born, I followed because no real comparator between the different solutions was available.

There has been a lot of water under the bridge since then, competition is well developed and I thought it was time to make a small comparison of the solutions that are offered to us.

Being human above all, my post will certainly not be 100% impartial and objective but I hope that it will help you in the choice of your frontend.

Steemit

STEEM's historical client, sober and complete, Steemit centralizes all possible interactions with the blockchain such as witness votes, access to internal trading, recovery accounts and so on, the list is quite substantial.

Use and ergonomics

Affichage

Having taken the side of sobriety, the display of posts by list or single-column is a little outdated, it is the same for the pages which have a small taste of austerity but where nothing is missing. A display for people who like minimalism.

Search engine

Steemit use the google search engine, the search gives rather relevant results on multi words searches to find a message. The unattractive visual aspect of the results and not being able to search directly for a user with the @ tag or a tag with the # tag makes its use case anecdotal.

I challenge you to display the list of some tags without cheating (not the right to control+F nor to type/modify directly in the url) in maximum 2 clicks.

Use

One appreciable thing with Steemit is that we really have access to everything and that it is a place where we are often obliged to fall back to carry out an action on the Steem blockchain.

As for writing post, once again we are in minimalism, get ready to have to do everything at once. Here no backup, no scheduler! I write and post hoping to avoid the crash, the power cut ...

Conclusion

Steemit is an application more adapted to account consultation and manipulation than to create post. Note that Steemit has the merit to be offered 100% free (without puncturing your reward) which deserves to be mentioned.

Busy

After Steemit came Busy, less austere than his eldest he still takes some references. More modern in appearance, Busy is pleasant to use and has chosen the path to accompany you to the maximum, reducing the risk of getting lost while consequently limiting the number of possible interactions.

Use and ergonomics

Affichage

Only single-column it leaves no choice. On the other hand, Busy makes reading messages very pleasant in terms of selected fonts, element breakdown and overall visual appearance.

Search engine

It hurts a lot, can we call it a search engine? Actually set to look for a user I don't see much use for it. Let us say that the search field is there for the moment only to decorate, to reserve the place for a true search engine certainly under current development.

As for Steemit, I challenge you to display the list of some tags without cheating (not the right to control+F nor to type/modify directly in the url) in maximum 2 clicks.

Use

Pleasant to use and intuitive are 2 strengths of Busy, the emphasis having been put on post creation with the possibility of saving drafts.

Another very big strength of Busy is its very useful notification system that allows you to avoid missing events related to your account.

no witness management (not even a link to steemit) as well as no link sending to the internal trading or some support elements are big lack.

Conclusion

You will have understood it, Busy is made more for the creators than for those wanting to browse, to walk free following moods on this blockchain. It is clear that draft management is a big advantage, but there is still a lot to do, so let's wish them well.

As for Steemit, note that Busy has the merit to be offered 100% free (without puncturing your reward) which deserves to be mentioned.

Steempeak

Steempeak, the last in the race, had to hit hard, and at least we can say that he did'nt miss too much! More square than roundness its full page displays, its dashboard, its scheduler, its management of drafts and templates are all innovative elements.

Use and ergonomics

Affichage

Steempeak, like its companions, offers basic single-column but with large images. But and this is the big step forward in the user experience, a full page, responsive display, with the most beautiful effect. It is a pity that all this is a bit spoiled by a skeleton a little too square. It lacks a little sweetness.

The dashboard, even if for the moment rather limited, is a very good idea and gives a good overview of the account.

Another element that for me was an expectation, the possibility of hiding the Resteem in the flows. This allows you to follow people who do too easily of Resteem and who also make interesting posts and that we have not followed so far because of that.

Search engine

A search almost non-existent (except by user) and the same thing also as regards tags (this time I leave you alone with the little test, unless you want to try).

Add on of 29/07/2018 integration of asksteem.com for the search engine and they work to add a tag search..

Use

For creators, everything is there, post creation with preview on the side, draft management, the ability to create templates, without forgetting a 2-week programming, Steempeak was able to hit hard.

As far as people looking for a surfing tool of the blockchain certainly the full page display is a huge strength but we fall back in the same way as on Busy.

We regret here too, the non management of witness (not even a link to steemit) or some support elements.

Conclusion

Steempeak is an application that gives back motivation and challenge to its competitors which is rather positive for us users. But there's still a lot of work to do to really stand out.

Like the previous two, Steempeak has the merit to be offered 100% free (without puncturing your reward) which deserves to be mentioned.

Add on of 29/07/2018
Today new features appeared like a notification widget, video preview in feed, integration of asksteem.com for the search engine etc...

eSteem

With eSteem we are closer to a cold wallet in the spirit where everything is stored on your computer. Based on Electron its advantage is to have in-house chromium browser, preventing any risk of incompatibility between different browsers. This has the advantage of being able to develop more quickly but also to make your data more secure. The disadvantage being obviously to have to install it on your computer.

Use and ergonomics

Affichage

I didn't really understand why eSteem took the same basic display as Steemit instead of a single-column. Especially that behind it also offers us the possibility of grid display as Steempeak while being a little less successful (matter of taste)

Search engine

I'm a bit perplexed about keyword search, the presentation with first a matching users row and then a post list below is a good idea but the results on multi words don't seem consistent compared to steemit. Think that the search engine is not quite ready yet.

In any case, the tag search via the small magnifying above the tag list, nothing to say, it's perfect. For my part it is the best of the 4, even if on the multi words we will prefer Steemit for the moment.

And then finally comes the pleasure of surfing, filtering for tags where anything is allowed. Trending, by date, by number of votes, by number of comments... Suddenly a new world opens up and we see things really differently depending on the selection

Use

There, I think everyone will be happy, viewer and creator. Certainly it is not perfect but the user experience is rather successful as much at the level of the navigation of the posts as their creation and management.

Very pleasant to use, it even has the luxury of allowing you to manage your witness (in the profile page), to have a link to the internal market (in the portfolio) and to be able to delegate Steem Power there.

Conclusion

An application really on the right track (compared to its mobile counterpart but that's for another episode) and full of promise. It remains to be seen how far we will take the next updates.

It should be noted that eSteem collects 10% of the reward of the post via beneficiaries which can do a lot over time. Are you ready to pay?

Conclusion

All, absolutely all decided that the first thing we would see is trending, honestly what's the point of seeing a trending as biased as Youtube's? Now it's time for something new!

Also, why doesn't any of them offer multitag search? That's something I don't understand.

As they all mention, these applications are beta versions, i.e. unfinalized versions subject to future improvements and bug fixes that may remain.

As a result, we must have a certain flexibility with regard to our demands and expectations of them. Especially since the first 3 are really 100% free applications.

Because I would like to draw your attention to the hypocrisy of some people boasting their free app which in reality is far from being it.

An app that takes some of your reward is not and never will be a free app. Those for example taking 15% for future improvement and development, on posts at 1 SDB with an average of 1 post per week that makes a price of 8.1 SDB/year, on posts at 10 SDB that makes a price of 81 SDB/year etc.... If you came here on the promise that no one will grant themselves any of your creative work the pill will have trouble getting through.

These applications should take as an example the mining that plays the transparency, from the first page you know that you will pay 1 or 2% of earnings to the mining pool and that the mining software will also take 1 or 2% of earnings. Reasonable, clear and precise!

Be vigilant and make your choices with full knowledge of the facts!

Thanks for this great review and thanks for including Steempeak ;)

Please feel free to join our Discord channel (or PM me) if you want to give us some hint on how we can improve ;)

Yeah what he said :)

Also I have some questions @french-tech

  1. What is list view? Is that just a view that has smaller thumbnail images? A non-graphical view?
  2. @steempeak does have hide resteems and mute user and market link you can move those to "YES"
  3. multicurrency, notifications, delegations are all on our to do list.
  4. You may want to consider adding lines for "Slideshow", "Quick account change", "Bookmarks", "Voting Slider", "wallet filters" some of us have some of those.
  5. We are also going to do beneficiary but we will not be a default beneficiary
  6. Finally witness links would be super easy we can do that for now until we come up with some nice witness display and vote stuff.

Hi @jarvie,

  1. Yep and it's good you not took this choice

  2. Thanks and sorry, my mistake when I made my table.

  3. Happy to know (don't worry I will make an update when major change)

  4. For "Slideshow", "Quick account change" and "wallet filters" Ok, I'll add it because I think you're right and these are significant adds, "Bookmark" is already in the table, "voting slider" everyone has it.

  5. Not seen yet when looking via steemd the posts I made with Steempeak, then I not mentioned it. What value you will put?

  6. Nice :)

Steampeak is a pleasant application and has a chance to be easy adopted. I think you will need to put in top priority something for an easy use of tag like a tag search upper the POPULAR TOPICS section.

I think you made a very good job for creator (just regret the limited scheduling) and I think you need to put the curator experience at the same level (you made already a very big step with this wonderful grid view).

  1. Beneficiary function we are looking into is allowing you (the user) to select who you would like to be a beneficiary of the reward (charity or splitting profits with a business partner etc)
Very different than forcing to take money from users.

And yes I agree a Topic Search is presently being looked into ... trying to see if anyone else has that. If so get us a link on discord so we can see how they do it.

Oh Ok, like this idea :)

Thanks @asgarth, I will add your Discord channel
