My Father, My Hero (Even though we never say it, I love you)

in #poetry7 years ago

Like many sons of fathers out in the world I have an unspoken and never admitted special bond with my own father. I love him after all. But we don't usually talk about such things as men. It's all very touchy-feely and not something my generation is good at.

Without knowing, he's taught me a great many things. His personal attitudes and behaviors undoubtedly rubbed off on my personality. Some of them not so great but others shaped who I am in a profound way.

That's not to say that I'm simply a carbon copy of my father. But rather I like to think of it as akin to the butterfly effect. Certain key lessons or values he's instilled in me have caused a unique and specific chain of events in my own personal experience thereafter.

And as a result I am who I am in large part because of my father. His lessons, a few in particular, ultimately brought me to a place where I feel content and hopeful for what the future holds for the rest of my days on this earth.

Tata, this is for you.

My Father, My Hero

Countless hours spent under your wings
I looked up to you in awe
Holding nails and tools for you
Watching you create
You fixed and built and mended broken items
Little did I know how useful is such a trait

I value my abilities now as an adult
To work with not only my mind but also my hands
With hard work and dedication to the task
My perseverance is rewarded because of you
My experiences as boy helping you build
Are attributed directly to the confidence which you instilled

You were always reading books and newspapers
Discussing the affairs of leaders and other news makers
I sat next to you with comic books in my hands
Dreaming of superheros and space travels
Not knowing the great service you did for me
One that I would carry for life guiding me purposefully
Armed with knowledge traversing pitfalls with certainty

The critical arguments you made at the dinner table
With doses of healthy skepticism
Dissecting the motivations and ramifications of global affairs
Asking the question always - What's in it for him?

What motivates one to action
This single lesson of asking cui bono?
Has opened my eyes
Truth has been unveiled in so many facets of my life
You've undoubtedly spared me from hardship and strife

Thank you father
My mentor you are
I never knew this until having children of my own
And we never speak so candidly this way
But your wisdom is valued and appreciated
Your actions have proved your love toward me
In ways that words can never say
