Building A Recycled Chicken Coop: Day 1

Hey everyone, and welcome to my chicken coop build! I have been asked by a few of my subscribers/followers to make more videos that show all of the different things that I am doing. So today I started filming while building the chicken coop. It isn't so much a DIY, it feels like a vlog, but a vlog about DIY haha.

It all started with us coming to this property. It is owned by a friend of mine, and I know that every thing we do here is going to benefit them some how. That is why we are putting the time, effort, and energy into this house, garden, and chickens.

There seems to be different types of material everywhere I look. I have found 4x8 sheets of wood. I have found 2 x 4's, 2 x 6's, I have found oak, pine, and even some mystery wood. I am also using some old barn wood.

I started by laying out the legs for the coop. I am using some rough saw 4 x 4 oak posts that are 48" long. I cut the exterior pieces to match the measurements I am wanting. I divided the height of the coop to be 32" on the inside and then 16" legs.

So I am piecing it together. I attached three sides of the coop, and then started to put in the floor. For the floor I am using the recycled barn wood. It has stood the test of time, and it should make a great floor. It is cut to fit snug, so I may not even actually screw it in. It looks pretty cool though.

When I attached the fourth side of the coop I cut a hole for the exterior laying boxes. If you ever get a chance to build a coop, exterior laying boxes are a game changer. The less contact with the inside of the coop...the healthier you may be long term.

So for today I have the four legs/vertical supports, the floor put in, and four sides attached. From here I am going to install a window on one end, and also cut in a pop door on the side. After that will be to install roosts and a feeder. Then I will be all set to put the roof on and fill that thing up with beautiful chickens!
