Fitting scales to a custom blade
The scales on a custom knife are what make it truly unique. Sure, a knife is metal and sharp and can have things etched on the blade, but the scales really set it apart from other knives.
Today is the next step in the custom knife build. I am shaping and fitting the custom maple scales to the blade. The bolsters that I finished yesterday are all set, and if you remember the bottom part is beveled so that the wood scales fit up tight behind them. So to get the scales right I have to do some filing.
I started with a dremel style rotary tool, but it turned out terribly. So I moved on to my file, but that didn't take off enough material. After I found another bit, it was back to the dremel and then I was banging.
It took alot of sanding and hand sanding to get the scales to fit at the right angle. It really fit together nicely, and then I moved onto the next part which is drilling and gluing. I didn't get that part on film, but it was nothing really special. If you would like to see that let me know.
I currently have the knife resting on top of my refrigerator wrapped up in clamps and all glued up. I am not going to be messing with it for just a couple of days, but when I do it will be time to shape up the handles. I am going to try to shape the handle using the rotary tool. There are alot of firsts happening with this project. First time using certain tools. First time trying certain techniques. I'm not afraid to try new things though!
Be well
