ENLIGHTENMENT: A Story About Good And Evil

in #life6 years ago (edited)

When I discuss good and evil with people, I often get the question “but what is the good?” I have been asked this in a multitude of manners. Others dive into individual moral judgements and demand to know whether X is right or wrong, as if having insight into moral theory ought to be the same as having the clarity to make accurate moral judgements. The idea that the concept of ‘good’ is either a specific type of thing, or nothing at all, has been made innumerable times to me and in many ways. Religious morality is usually objective by the virtue of being declared by God. It seems like its so-called “objectivity” is only taken as true if ignoring the fact that the declaration of moral rules is derived from God’s subjective desires or pleasures and not due to some objective truth.

Moral subjectivists hold that moral determinations are made by the individual, for the individual and are true in that sense. Though how a morally good judgement can also be morally evil is beyond me, and it is a necessary consequence of moral subjectivism that for every judgement of good, there is going to be an independent judgement of evil. These goods and evils seem to cancel each-other out. In the face of either, moral nihilism seems far saner. At least it’s easier to doubt the existence or efficacy of any moral theory and be agnostic or nihilist on the subject. But it’s intellectually lazy. Often people I talk to who adhere to one of these few views will proclaim “objective secular morality is impossible, I/a college roommate tried for 1-3 years and failed!” At this point if you’ve got someone with some knowledge about all of this and you propose objective morality. The next question is: “is it all just an illusion?”

I think we all as human's have installed in us a general Idea on what is good vs. what is evil. Our daily lives, up-bringing and surroundings among other things influences what can be called grey areas.

For example ..

  • It's evil to kill a person for no reason.

  • It's good help out a person in need

  • Grey area... Killing / hunting over populated animals.

Well said, that is pure logic speaking. But what if not everyone has those standards, for example rich greedy people, psychopats, etc.? They are doing bad stuff with no qonsecuences at all. I believe that good can be evil sometimes and vice versa. For example: Guy asks you for a cigarette/beer, you know it's not good for them, especially if it was a homeless guy asking you who has not eaten anything long time, and you give it to him which is a good deed. Doesn't good cancel out evil and evil cancels out good? Doesn't that mean that neither of those exists actually?

Standards and Good vs Evil are not the same thing. Most those rich people / psychopaths know they are doing evil when they are doing it. They simply just don't care due to their own selfish needs / wants. Such as money.

Giving someone a cigarette / beer even though it's bad for their health doesn't classify as evil. Doing so with the intent to harm would be. For example .. someone was an alcoholic and you pressured a beer onto him. Well that can be classified as evil. And I use the word evil loosely in that situation. As I am not sure if that would even classify as evil. I would have some other choice words I rather not place here for that type of behavior.

Agreed about good can be evil and vise versa. We could apply the argument " does xxxx actually exist " to just about anything. Your response reminds me of a quote I read years ago that always stuck in my head which was ....

If there is no God then there is no such thing as morals and if there is no morals there is no such thing as right or wrong.

I'm not saying I agree with that quote ... I'm only just sharing it .

God damn! You've said it so perfectly. I wish I wasn't stupid stoned now, so I'm just gonna say this: "every thing is everything". I hope that resonates with you (I'm sure it does ;) ). Peace man. ✌😎

Only for girls.

It's for everyone.
