It's as you said, dishonesty destroyed pretty much every chance this model had to become an actual standard, because most people won't trust a developer unless it has already done some good work before (and in that case, that developer often doesn't need early access to pay for their next game). There have been developers who looked trustworthy and actually implemented stuff in their games to make it look like they were listening to the community, and then one day ran off with the money and disappeared. I think that unless Steam and the others put into effect some kind of control that prevents this kind of scam, this model will inevitably see its end.
