Retro Review - Mischief Makers

in INVEN Gaming4 years ago

I never had a Nintendo 64, so many games on this famous and beloved Nintendo system had to be played at a friend's house who did have one (although thanks to the emulators I was able to play many games on this system). At that time we always played the classic video games like: Super Mario 64, Mario Party, Mario Kart, GoldenEye 007 and a wrestling game that I don't remember the name, but I remember that my friend also had a game that I personally liked a lot because it was a platform game and I really thought it was quite fun at that time. Today I think his mechanics haven't aged that badly, but his graphics have, but it's a game that I remember very fondly.

That's why today's Retro Review is about: Mischief Makers.

Mischief Makers is a story full of lots of humor, with parodies of other video games and even some anime. It's a pretty simple game, but it has a good sense of humor that is quite enjoyable and fun. It's a story full of adventure and crazy situations.

It all starts when our protagonist, Marina, who is an assistant robot and her perverted creator, Professor Theo, were on the planet Clancer, since Theo went to this planet to do some research with its inhabitants, but everything was going to change when the professor was suddenly kidnapped by a group of villains who have this planet and its inhabitants under their control, and plan to use their scientific knowledge to dominate the universe. Therefore everything is in the hands of Marina, and she will have to go through a series of scenarios defeating the henchmen of this group of villains whose name is The Empire, in order to bring peace to this planet and of course, also rescue their beloved but perverted creator.

I think Mischief Makers has aged a little badly over the years, I remember when I first played it a few years ago, I thought it was a graphically outstanding game and because of its varied and very striking colour palette I considered it a very good title in this respect, but after playing it again after many years I've noticed that the passing of the years has affected it a little bit as far as the graphic aspect is concerned, but even so, due to the nostalgia (which we all know is very strong), when playing it I really don't care about this, since being a video game of which it was part of my childhood these technical aspects become secondary.

Mischief Makers is a 2D title but it has similar characteristics to Donkey Kong Country, but clearly with a lower graphic level. Although a positive aspect with its graphic aspect is that in some scenarios we will find depth effects, so there will be scenarios that despite their obvious graphic limitation, visually look very good and create an effect that the scenario is bigger than it really is and also because the scenarios have the classic pre-render design they are able to show a little more defined details.

The animations could be said to be very good, they are fluid and very varied and being a game of this genre this is a very important aspect to highlight. The design of our main character is quite curious, as it is a robot, but despite that it has characteristics of a human being, in a way it reminds us of Astroboy.

The soundtrack is very good, we will be able to listen to the typical melodies with a cheerful mood, characteristic of an adventure game. But there is also music for many situations that will happen in this adventure, like when we are facing a final boss, the music changes to a serious and in some cases deep melody. In general, Mischief Makers in terms of its sound aspect is quite adequate and although no melody stands out too much, I must say that they fulfill their main purpose.

Mischief Makers is a side-scrolling platform game with the classic features of this type of video game. With our character we will go through scenarios and defeat any enemy in front of us, overcome obstacles of all kinds, solve puzzles that challenge our ability to control our character.

The way we eliminate our enemies is not the conventional one, since in games of this style to defeat the enemies, our character will have to fight hand-to-hand, using some kind of weapon such as knives, swords or even a stick, or even firearms. In the case of Mischief Makers he has a quite particular "attack" mechanic, since our character, Marina, instead of attacking her enemies as such, she can hold them and then shake them. So in order to eliminate the enemies, we have to grab one and throw it to another, no doubt this video game is out of the ordinary to apply quite rare, but original mechanics in a game like that. But in addition to using these skills to eliminate enemies, they will also help us to climb up to certain places and thereby allow us to overcome any obstacles we may have in our way.

Marina will also have typical skills of a robot like the ability to move at greater speed, ie the typical and useful "dash", this skill will allow us to move with greater speed on stage and even help us to avoid certain attacks from our enemies. But in addition to this, not in all scenarios we will have to defeat enemies, in some of them we will only have to reach a certain point and obtain some object, or also destroy certain obstacles that are obstructing our path. The truth is that, in terms of the variety of situations we have to do in this adventure is very varied and only we do not have to defeat enemies along many scenarios. Mischief Makers really is a lot of fun.

Mischief Makers is certainly a fun-filled game, with a wide variety of things to do, and even though it may have aged graphically, in terms of fun it still looks like the first day I played it.
