Who wins when two authoritarians fight?
The answer to that question is quite clear.. It is the authoritarians.
But there is a bit more to understand here. The first is the concept of a false dichotomy: presenting only two options when there are many more. This is what I do to my children every morning.
I ask "Do you want cheese or peanut butter on your bread?" Then they are happy to choose one. They dont see that there would also be the option to ask for chocolate spread and simply choose from the options I gave them.
But this is not only a trick parents use to guide the decisions of their children, we ourselves are often subject to this reduction of options, making us believe we are the ones that choose when in fact the real decision was made by somebody else. For example in politics we are told to vote for left-type authoritarianism or right-type authoritarianism. And instead of waiting and realising that we dont want any type of authoritarianism, most people are happy to choose their left or right brand and then feel represented by them. They support authoritarians and they get authoritarians.
The second aspect is letting these two brands oppose each other. That gives the impression that they are fundamentally different and that there is a real choice to be made.
The second benefit of public confrontation between both parties is creating an atmosphere of hate and separation also in the population. And from that it follows that both sides want even more authoritarianism to fight their opponents. There are countless examples for this. Currently the left seems to have no problem attacking freedom of speech just to silence some guys from the right on social media. The right on the other hand does support a reduction of liberty to fight illegal immigrants that in their view are allied to the left.
In the meanwhile the authoritarians smile. They are more than happy to implement all of the ideas posed by both the left and the right just to increase their own power.
So when two authoritarians fight, of course the authoritarians win; both of them.
On a related note, I was a bit surprised when I first learned that many "competing" retailers are owned by the same entity ... pretending to give consumers a real choice between two competing brands, while in reality one entity has market dominance.
