CORRUPTION IS VERY DECEPTIVE.

images(9).jpgCorruption is very deceptive. It always tries to have many covers so that when one is removed, it can hide under another .

So ,instead of removing cover by cover BURN THE WHOLE BUNCH

In JSS 1 ,I did Fine Arts and our teacher asked us to make brooms for our continuous assessment. As a good student, I went out in search for the raw materials and found a small quantity and began my journey; only to get to school to find out that my classmates were all submitting already made brooms bought from the market and were been scored according to the size of your broom.

All those who brought brooms that sold between 20-50naira scored 8 over 20. I went with my own already made broom too and she looked at the size and asked what kind of score my size of broom could earn.

In an attempt to save myself from further questioning, I said : 8% Ma and she replied : thank God you know. I can still remember my position that day in the staff room with my brown short and white shirt.

My school didn't use caps; only girls wore Barretts.
Our principal then loved standing at the gate to watch students file in observed that JSS 1 students were always filing in with different sizes of brooms. Finally , the Principal called for my fine arts teacher and gave her a "hot bath" but as surely expected the woman denied asking students to buy brooms.

She ran back to the class with remnants of a well queried teacher on her face and screamed at us if she ever asked anyone to buy brooms and in our "corporate ignorance", the whole class chorused " NO".

thinking about that event today , I salute my principal and the parents who kept grumbling after buying brooms over three times until the walls and waves could transmit them to the Principal.

I see also the many sides of corruption and official manipulation.
It is true that of course my fine arts teacher didn't ask anyone to buy brooms but I wonder ,if our fine arts teacher who was at time (by my calculation) in her early thirties could not identify broom sticks made from fresh palm trees and the dried ones sold in the markets .

And whether she considered it not surprising that within few days in a town with no forest close by how students could make such large amount of brooms.

My conclusion is this: my teacher actually expected that we bring her brooms from the market for her own merchandise.
It is this same madness that makes a contractor who even though he has followed due process to submit his bid for a contract , take a huge sum of money to a government official whose office has a say in how contracts are awarded to appreciate him.

The question is to appreciate him for doing what? Is it for being a government official or for being a human being ? Or for an anticipated help? I wonder oo.
What of undergraduates who take a bottle of Eva wine and a brown envelop anytime he goes to see his project supervisor ? When he is asked why ? He says: it is to say "thank you ". How many times will you say thank you.

What do we say to home economics teachers who after cooking practicals collect more 95% of the food and snack from the students who provided every dim leaving them to grumble and wishing they could flog or drug their teachers?
What then do I say about lecturers who use attendance list to sell their typographical Error filled textbooks that defies all research principles and thereafter fail any student who doesn't buy the 14 font textbook ?

All of us (Me and I ) must by God's Divine Grace find a way out of this mess.
Let us in no way ever duplicate this bad syndrome.
Let's continue to insist on what is right.

Do something meaningful, corrective, intelligible and powerful with the authority you have today no matter how small it is.

One right step every time makes all the difference .

Thanks for reading.
