Floyd Mayweather & Conor McGregor embark on a four-city international press tour to announce their Saturday, Aug. 26 blockbuster on SHOWTIME PPV.
I would love to hear your opinions on this fight. I am very conflicted, as I am am avid boxing fan but despise Mayweather. Only as of late have I really gotten into UFC, and it has been only because of McGregor. I have seen and heard a lot of people who are pretty annoyed by this impending fight.
Well glad to see you have gotten into MMA. Personally, I am conflicted also. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on boxing and mma. I am partial more to MMA. To me, boxing has been somewhat boring. I never really liked Mayweather. I respect him, and I do think he's the greatest technical boxer that has ever lived. But as far as a fight goes, that can be boring.
I really never expected this fight to happen. While mma and the UFC have some pretty great strikers, it's still totally different than traditional boxing. For one, the stances are very different because you have to defend takedowns and throws, which you do not have to worry about. You'll never see Floyd come to MMA, ever, never, period. So, I give props to McGregor to crossing over to a fight where he will not have the advantage. He's taking a huge risk, and technically, he doesn't have the boxing skill level to beat Floyd.
However, I think many are underestimating McGregor. I don't think that McGregor is going to go in and try to play a straight up boxing game. He's going to do what he always does, and move in a very unorthodox way. It's a very big X factor that Floyd really doesn't know what to expect like he would against any of his past opponents.
In the end, I'm happy this fight is taking place. Regardless of who wins, I think it helps both sports, it helps both economies. Yes, there are technically some much better boxing fights you could put on, but boxing just doesn't have that "it" factor like it once did. And that's not bashing boxing. The UFC has changed the game when it comes to fight promoting.
I don't know if Conor has a legit chance, but my money and hope is for Conor to win. If Mayweather wins, everyone will say, see, he should have won. McGregor is the true underdog here, but we've seen him play the underdog role much of his career. If he happens to pull this off, he will truly be a legit mega-star.
The best thing about this fight, is it's bringing about lots of opinions, lots of buzz, and in the end that's a fight promotor's dream. The real winners are the fans though. You don't get too many fights where athletes cross over. That alone is special.
I believe this is going to be an interesting fight but I have to say they are out of their comfort zone. McGregor fight's in UFC Floyd Mayweather fights in the WBC.Floyd Mayweather is the best in the business he knows what he is doing, I don't think Connor MacGregor can beat Mayweather. I am sure many people are looking forward to the upcoming fight we are just hoping that it's not like Manny Pacquiao or Canelo Alvarez fight. I'm still going for money Floyd Mayweather @mannyfig1956
Yeah I know what you mean. I really don't think it will be like Pacquiao or Alvarez. I think Conor alone can make it exciting because you don't exactly know what to expect from him. I mean he doesn't move like most other MMA fighters, and his boxing is not technical enough to move like any normal boxer that Mayweather has faced. That alone, of course, does not necessarily mean that Conor has any chance to win. The arguments from most boxing fans will be he only has a punchers chance. We will definitely find out. It's very likely that Mayweather can escape this fight without taking damage. But the real question is, will he take the risks to knock Conor out? Conor pretty much has to push the pace early and go for the kill. He has virtually no chance of winning a decision. If Mayweather sees that Conor has no chance he could easily cruise to a decision victory. But, I honestly don't think Conor will let him slide with that. I think Conor wants to shock the world, and he's willing to risk the KO to prove a point. Mayweather definitely does not want to gain that 1 loss on his record, specially to an MMA fighter. This fight poses so many questions from so many angles. It truly is a special event, even if it is somewhat of a freak show or non-traditional fight.
My money is on Conor, if anything, simply because he is the under dog. And in reality I have spent most of his career rooting for someone to shut his ass up. He beat quite a few fighters I really wanted to win. I was super excited to see Nate Diaz destroy him in their first fight. While I believe Mayweather should and most likely will win this boxing match, I'll definitely be placing my money on Conor for that "what if" moment.
Floyd Mayweather is going into his 50th fight of his career this flight means a lot, no one has ever been undefeated in the WBC. This fight for Mayweather means a great deal to him. O'Connor, on the other hand, wants to prove to the world that he can stand toe to toe with the best in the world. People in the business of boxing are saying that the Connor McGregor stands no chance all he has like you said a punchers chance. The fight is approaching soon so we will have to wait and see who's the best in the world
I think from a strict boxing perspective he has no chance.. but do you think Conor is gonna go in there and try to fight like a strict boxer. His stance, his movement, everything he does in the Octagon, he will move like that in the boxing ring. He's not gonna try to box him like a traditional boxer that Floyd has faced.
The other thing to consider is that this is Floyd's 50th fight with a 2 year layoff. Will he have ring rust? He even admits he doesn't fight or move like he used to. Conor is fresh out of multiple fights. Floyd will be relying totally on his skill set, which boxing wise is far superior. But if Conor can capitalize on the movement, you never know what he can hit him with. Floyd has never faced someone who will attempt to fight him the way that Conor will.
I think that's what makes this interesting. If people think that Conor is going to go in there and try to fight a slow pace boxing match and get picked apart, and miss everything he throws at Floyd, I think they don't understand what's going to happen.
That doesn't necessarily mean that Conor will beat him. But I think people will be surprised with what he brings to the table.
Consider this. In MMA you cannot be broken up in the clinch unless you are both leaning on the cage and not really advancing positions. In boxing, you clinch to rest, stall the fight, or set up really crisp dirty boxing. I don't think Conor will use the clinch the way most boxers do, and MMA fighters have a lot more experience in using the clinch to their advantage.
Also consider this, of course Conor cannot shoot for a takedown, or throw any type of kicks. However, because he fights MMA, he can shoot from the outside like you would for a takedown. MMA fighters are great at faking takedowns and following with strikes. Rules will prevent him from connecting, attempting, and completing any takedowns, but he can use those movements and setups to bring a different range of striking. Of course he cannot throw kicks, or even attempt to throw his kicks or spinning kicks. But how many boxers throw spinning anything, or dare spin or turn their back to an opponent like in MMA. We might see some very different movement as far as angles, spinning, etc that we have never seen in a boxing match.
All of this may be confusing to Floyd, and affect his game more than people may think. I think it's very dependent on what exactly Conor's game plan is. But I highly doubt he should, or will go in there and try to compete in a straight up boxing match. He will not be fluid, or smooth or quick enough to compete with Floyd on that level.
I think that's why this fight is so interesting. What does a non boxer, do against the greatest boxer in the world?
I think this is great for McGregor to build his portfolio. Outside of that I don't see this as much of a fight..that is unless they have the same people scoring the bout as the imbeciles that that screwed over PacMan in his last fight.
Conor cannot win a boxing match on the scorecards. If it goes to decision he will lose. I think he will try to fight a very non-traditional boxing match, and go for the kill before the 4th round. If Mayweather can play his game like he normally does, and cause Conor to miss, he'll win by decision, or maybe even by KO if he can make Conor pay.
I agree and like most just see this as a spectacle more than an actual event. I can't recall the last good fight in boxing at any weight class. People are so pampered from high purses and picky about who they will fight no one is willing to take a risk.
@framelalife This is exactly what I have been saying. It really is exciting. I have been seeing so many arguments over this. People saying that it is a joke, that Mayweather should fight someone worth fighting, such as GGG or Alvarez, which I am not gonna argue that point. I feel he should too. But Mayweather has and always will be about the money, and right now the money is with Mcgregor. And since that is the case I feel like people should just relax and enjoy the fight. It's funny how the opinions you have about Mcgregor so closely resemble my feelings on Mayweather. In the end like you said, it may be a freak show, But it will be entertaining to say the least. And essentially isn't that what each sport is about?
I think it's interesting that people are claiming it's a joke. Yes, with many MMA fighters it could be a joke. If any fighter tries to play boxing with Mayweather, they will probably lose. I don't think Conor is going to do that. See my comments above for more of what I think will happen.
From what I hear, much of the talk about it being a joke, or bad for boxing, etc. is coming from other promotions, and DeLaHoya, whom Dana said tried to set up Conor to fight against his boxers.
Who knows. We really wont know til it happens. Can Conor compete? Or can he shock the world by fighting with a style that throws Mayweather off?
