I Have Started Corpsing

in #halloween6 years ago

Did the title get you going? A real grabber eh? When I tell people I have been corpsing, the reactions I get are quite hilarious. Some of you may know what I am talking about and to a lot of you, trust me it is not what you might be thinking.

We have hit mid September all of a sudden. Time is flying by and I am seriously getting behind in the projects I need to be doing for halloween. The good thing is that I have figured out what I am 'dressing up' as last year.

I am one of those people that go big for halloween. It's my time to shine, once a year on something that I really like without people looking at me weird. So I take the occasion and go big. Some like Christmas, some like Valentines day. To each our own, right?

So the preparations begin.

Corpsing is when you take a skeleton or a skull and transform it into something that looks like it is decaying. A corpse.

This is the first time I do it. The process is easy. But to get it to look right takes a little bit of time. I am not a painter. I've painted before but never to make a skull look realistic. So some research is required to make it look right and practice.

I started using old cheap skulls that I have had for quite some time. I think they might be from Dollarama or Walmart. You don't need an expensive skull/skeleton to do the job.

What you will need with that is:

  • Plastic sheet

IMG_20180917_120549[1].jpg

This costed me $3 and something from Walmart. It is made for covering your floors when painting. Walmart didn't have a vast variety. They offered either a cloth material or this really thin plastic. Other Walmarts may carry better items.

  • Heat gun

IMG_20180917_120630[1].jpg

I borrowed my dad's heat gun. You can easily find this at any hardware stores and I was told they are not that expensive. Thinking $30 maybe?

  • Stain

IMG_20180917_131609[1].jpg

I wasn't sure of how dark the color would be. I did go with Kona, on the darker side, knowing that I would be painting plastic and on white, trying to prevent having to do multiple layers. This costed me about $15 give or take.

  • Scissors.

  • Paint brush.

  • Paper towel

Do I need to take a picture of the scissors, paper towel and paintbrush? I just grabbed paint brushes from Dollarama. I grabbed soft bristles as to not tear away the plastic.

The process

IMG_20180917_120534[1].jpg

This is just a practice rond to get a feel of what I was doing. Wrap the skull in plastic as shown. You can tape the back of it to help keep it in place if you like. I didn't bother with that, I have no tape :p It worked just fine without it.
Plug in the heat gun and aim it at the plastic. The idea is to 'shrink wrap' it, letting the plastic make holes as though it is flesh decaying, rotting away.

IMG_20180917_120943[1].jpg

So the plastic I have is a bit thin and shrank a bit too much. But that's ok. Jus add another layer of plastic if that happens to you and keep on going with the heat gun. Keeping in mind that the closer you are and the father away you are does change the effects to the plastic.

IMG_20180917_122230[1].jpg

As you can see there is a bit of texture round the mouth, like if the skin was ripping apart. Perfect. The only thing I can complain about is because of the plastic being quite thin, the holes of the eyes opened up way too fast thus giving too big of holes that I wanted. And also that the skulls did not have opened mouths. That is 2 things...

And so we go on to painting once satisfied enough. Because of this being a practice round, I let my little girl be my helper.
The way to do it is paint on it and then wipe it with a paper towel. This helps so that you do not get a solid dark brown skull entirely.

IMG_20180917_122325[1].jpg

IMG_20180917_122342[1].jpg

Once doing that all over, you can either be satisfied with that you did or add more plastic to have more texture.
I let my girl do what she wanted with this one and this is how it turned out.

IMG_20180917_124802[1].jpg

IMG_20180917_124825[1].jpg

The stain is a bit too dark actually and can't really see all the details. So with this I made another one.

IMG_20180917_125027[1].jpg

This time I started with wrapping it twice. The eye holes once more getting too big than what I wanted That part is quite frustrating. I added more plastic to play around with it. Pulling it to bunch up more to one area to get that pulling effect at the mouth.
Then I added the stain but Not on the skull itself. I wanted to work with the skull to get a different look. Perhaps being more grey or something. Unsure of hot to make it look right.

IMG_20180917_131420[1].jpg

IMG_20180917_131446[1].jpg

I set the two skulls aside and started working on other things. Like this small skeleton. About the length of my forearm. All for good practice.

IMG_20180917_145357[1].jpg

I wrapped this guy up 3 times thinking I would get something great from it.

IMG_20180917_145545[1].jpg

Bad idea to it that way. The limbs were all stuck together. I had to cut it all up and remove the plastic and start over. Covering only parts at a time. It was long to do because of all the mini parts.

IMG_20180917_151055[1].jpgIMG_20180917_151102[1].jpg

I kept on doing more skulls after that.

IMG_20180917_144925[1].jpg

I have done a total of 4 (or 5) skulls but only the 2 painted that I am showing in this post.

I didn't let the skull completely dry before painting because I was too anxious to finish them. The one my daughter did, I added some yellow paint to add definition.
The one I made I wanted to have a different look so I used Ivory black and yellow paint mixed together for the skull and then went around with yellow and green (not mixed) for definition.

IMG_20180917_211059[1].jpgIMG_20180917_211113[1].jpg

You can see that my painting skills for this kind of thing is not so great. So honestly if you have any tips for me on making this look better, more awesome let me know. I am not quite satisfied with it but I do say that I like the look of the one on the left, using the stain on the skull as well but I do like more the one of the right because it has more earthy tones. I think combining the 2 will perhaps give me more of a look I was trying to go for (?). Calling all artists out there! Tell me what you think on making this better.

For now I continue to corpse more skeletons and skulls, holding off to paint till I gain the proper knowledge. I looked at images but it doesn't tell me what colors or where to highlight or how to get the effect.
Nevertheless, I think it still looks better than just a plain ol skull :D

The title definitely got my attention! Well done!

I like your creative use of plastic wrap and a heat gun. That's a great way to get custom, intricate Halloween decor without having to pay top dollar for it. I wish I had that kind of motivation; Halloween is my favorite holiday as well, but I usually wait until the last minute to even get a costume together.

Haha! I knew it :P

The next thing I want to do is incorporate material like cheesecloth or something, might be able to make a more realistic mummy this way.
I refuse to pay a lot of money for things so I search for good diy's on the internet hoping that the material cost isnt as much as buying the thing as well.
I will be posting the skeleton ones I do and then after that I was thinking of a project to make with styrofoam. It will be interesting :D

What a great and awesome project. I didn't know that we can make such convincing decoration like these without spending too much money. I really enjoy looking and reading at your creation process and the final skulls look awesome :D.

Congratulations on your curie vote. Totally deserve it ^_^.

Thank you and thank you :p

The less money spent, the better. I find halloween decorations (and xmas) are the most expensive to buy at stores and yet there are many things we can make ourselves. Just got to do it and know how to as well. I am still searching for many more things I can make by hand but for now I still have more corpses to make. I have a big yard to fill lol :P
Thank you for stopping by and commenting. I am grateful for your time spent on reading my post ^_^

Your title definitely attracted my attention. wow Corpsing. At first any short story about corposing? Apparently it was not. It was about build a corpse by using skeleton or skull. And I enjoyed reading your article. I didn't know that it required so much work. But seems that your daughter enjoyed it too.. By looking in your final product, you definitely shine in this Halloween.

Haha I love it that the title grabbed at your curiosity. Almost like an April fools joke :P

It really doesn't take that much work. The plastic shrinks almost too fast and to paint it is nothing. I was able to get those 2 done plus a few other skulls and 2 skeletons 'shrink wrapped' in one afternoon.
My daughter is quite proud of what she did and doesn't hesitate to tell everyone which one is hers. Can tell she is my daughter for the fact that she enjoyed making those corpsed skulls as much as I did lol.

It really fun if mother and daughter has same hobbies. And it also a way for bonding as well.

Well, you got me, too, @foxyspirit! In my experience, corpsing was when an actor laughed at an inappropriate time during a performance. So... Interesting techniques, but myself, not being a fan of skulls and skeletons, am likely to try them on something else! Good luck and please do share the finished product!

Oh you taught me something, I didn't know that.
What would you try to do with them? You have got me intrigued :)

It's British theatrical slang. I don't think I explained it very well - here's a link to the Oxford Dictionary that will explain it better.

Not the brightest button at the moment, I'm not! ;)

You are really going all out for Halloween @foxyspirit! The skulls look creeepy!!! But I loved what you did. The plastic cover plus the paint really makes it look like flesh decaying! Eeewwww.. Where did you learn this method? And it is so cool that your daughter participates in this as well. She is a brave girl. I would have freaked out looking at even the white skull :D

Haha! I thought it would creep her out as well but she was so focused and wanted to help me so badly, so I just let her do her thing. She did amazingly well.
On facebook I am with a group where people make their own halloween decorations. This was one of the many things they make and share but I haven't found who created this way of making them. There are plenty of videos on youtube as well. I wish I could give credit to the original person but I can't find out who that was. And I am thinking it is not from this year as well.

I always go all out, as much as I can for halloween. Costumes and decorations, all of it. It's my thing lol. I have people asking me what they should dress up as for halloween over time. Every time I do I end up having to help them for the halloween dance and I lose time for myself. A few times those people have one first place. Happy for them, just wishing they would give credit as to who thought of it/made it etc. Ah well, small town, people know anyways ^_^

Aaaww your daughter is so sweeet :)
You know what, you should set up a Halloween preparation, consultation services company :) Makes sense to get paid for the service you give to them ya? Well, I guess as long as everyone is happy at the end of the day :) Halloween is getting nearer.. How is your prep currently? :D

I bet you could probably get a similar effect just using recycled bags from stores. You'd probably have to remove any spots with logos though, as well as the handles.

Awesome little project. I kinda wanna try it myself.

It's quite possible. As long as the plastic can shrink and do ok with the heat gun. A good paint to cover logos even.
If you do try it, let me know how it turns out. I would love to see it.

Hahaha that's awesome :D love the overall effect, looks dramatically better then the original skull/skeleton.
Looks like a fun project Todo with the family this weekend :D thanks for posting.

It is an awesome project to do with family. Just remember to wear gloves and old clothing. It gets messy :p

Thanks for stopping by ;)

Thank you! This is so cool. I will definitely check out the previous showcase. Although right now I am not sure of what more to add, but if I think of anything I will be sure to let you know ^_^

This is really cool, and very effective! I think they all look convincing, but the last one is your best, in my opinion. The green isn't realistic, but I think it makes it look rly gross and kinda zombie-ish, or like it's been decaying in a forest and moss is somehow growing on it?

Awesome! Thank you for the feedback! Much appreciated. I was thinking the same thing as you but that is from my point of view. I think that since because I am the one that made it that I could be seeing it differently from what others see.
I live in a small town surrounded by forest so it could work lol. But I will probably stick to the last one's style more. It took less time too.

@foxyspirit I loved the last touch of yellow and black to give more life to the skull I also loved how your daughter helps you painting is good to work as a family I hope that you cresca to give you ideas and work together the last photo if that is a skull @neymath10 a greeting from VEnezuela

Thank you :D Today perhaps I will have my son do some too. He is a bit sick so maybe this will lift his spirits ^_^. Thank you for coming by <3
