The Rapidan Dam Cafe
My father coined the term "ibocorist" decades ago, when he and my mother realized how much they enjoyed eating at locally owned, non-chain restaurants in small towns. It is both a noun and an acronym, which stands for:
International Brotherhood Of Checking Out Restaurants In Small Towns.
As a practicing ibocorist, I decided to try out the Rapidan Dam Cafe, in Rapidan, MN.
As the name would suggest, the Rapidan Dam Cafe is located right next to the Rapidan Dam. According to the owners, the building has been a combination business and home since 1910. It has served as a bait shop, coffee shop, grocery store, and gas station. When it was purchased in 1971, the family who purchased it renovated and expanded the restaurant to include more seating and a dedicated kitchen.
For a small restaurant in the outskirts of a tiny town in rural Minnesota, the guest book is surprisingly diverse. The Rapidan Dam Cafe has attracted people from very far indeed. Today, a family from Switzerland was enjoying the pie.
Classic burger with potato salad and a coffee
After a brief run through the options, I ordered a hamburger with fried onions, tomato, and lettuce, with a side of potato salad, and a cup of hot coffee. All three were very good, as were the atmosphere and staff.
Whispers have reached my ears of the amazing pies but, alas, a pie review must wait until I can return with a sugar craving...
The Rapidan Dam Cafe is a little old fashioned and offers a traditional American Midwestern experience. This extends to the check-out, where the accepted currencies are cash or check. Charge cards are not an option, so plan accordingly!
If you're looking to experience American Midwestern culture or just out for a great burger, I strongly recommend the Rapidan Dam Cafe!
So, are you an ibocorist?
Thank you for checking out the post!

I am exactly the same, there is no appeal to chain restaurants for me. I like meeting new people and exciting/interesting places. Places like these always have a lot of character.
It can be a bit of a gamble, but definitely more enjoyable! When I lived in Spain, I used to look for the places with a lot of locals dining. Those ones were usually a sure bet!
cool post @fotosdenada
thanks! :-)
