Description
Did you know that over 1.2 Billion people all around the world don't have access to electricity? When the sun goes down, they use dangerous, expensive and polluting kerosene lamps to provide a source of light.
Gravity light is a lamp that uses kinetic energy. Their product works by elevating a weight filled with massive objects such as rocks to a pulley system that slowly generates power to the lamp.
This lamp doesn't need any batteries, provide instant light for 20 minutes, don't cost anything and is great for our planet!

This is a fantastic project. What a great way to bring some sustainable energy to people who are otherwise limited in resources. The website has a great description of the project and the reasoning behind it. I found it very informative. I looked into the cost of these lamps. You can buy them for about $80 USD. It would be great to see some initiatives to get it into the areas that need it most and where they are least likely to be able to afford it. Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen this before.
80USD is a little bit expensive, way cheaper to buy a classic lamp with batteries.
But the concept is so cool et innovative that will probably also buy at least one!
Plus, every time you bought one you support the foundation which is cool!
i've tried a number of these style of products. the only down side i would say is BUILD QUALITY and the ability to 'SWAP THEM OUT' with getting a replacement. it's a massive area, i like what 'goal zero' are doing in this area too -- they have some great kit, i will post it up here.
Well, let's say that this product is (I hope) the first step for an improved version cheaper and with a longer lighting time! :)
absolutely. you certainly need the first version of anything to get the funds for the next version, i LOVE inventions.
that would be useful especially in AFRICA,i hope one day get more than 20 minutes.thank you for sharing this
Well 20minutes to light, and 5 seconds to "recharge" the lamp. The foundation provides this lamp into some countries in Africa! :)
Pros:
Cons:
Yeah, it's more expensive than a classic light for sure!
But every time you bought the lamp, you help the foundation that provides these lamps for free in 3rd world countries! :)
I've heard of this project, but it's been a while since I've seen an update. It is so simple and direct, should be a real blessing for the 'non-electrified' on the planet.
Thanks for showing us the deal. Very cool.
One day I will send Connie one! ahah
