Why Go On?—Three Reasons to Keep Living

in #life7 years ago

Introduction

Have are ever had thoughts of suicide? Have you ever heard a friend think or talked about taking their life? Have you ever felt so hopeless that death seems like the only way out? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in good company. Reports show that many people have not only thought about taking their life, a good number have done it with success. Consider this stat:

Some studies have shown that for every death by suicide, 200 people have attempted suicide and 400 [other] people have thought about it.”—THE GAZETTE, MONTREAL, CANADA.

So in the middle of thick gloom when there seems no way out, how can one find the motivation to live? There are several things that can give us reason to appreciate the life we have. But this article will focus on 3 reasons that can completely change our outlook even if we think we are at the end of a bottomless pit. Consider them:

1. Things can Change: No matter how dire our situation might seem, things can and does change. For most of us, we have not always been in the situation that made us consider suicide. The problem started one day and there is firm reason to believe that it will go one day too. Most of the situations we are in life are just temporary - they come and go. So when we see our situation as something that happened in the passing, it can give us the courage to bear adversity. Even if it is something that obviously wont change - such as a chronic illness or disability, we can change our outlook and view our situation in a positive light. Accepting your changed situation will make you open to accept or look for help. This will give you a measure of control and confidence to move on.

2. You can obtain help: If we accepted our situation, we see that there could be a way to make things better. No matter what we face in life, there is always some form of help available to us. For example, in the case of illness, we can receive help from health care professionals like doctors. If we suffer loss of property or means of livelihood, we can still count on friends, family, or other people who care to assist us rebuild. When we reach out for help, we will definitely find it. And when we accept any form of help extended to us, our situation begins to change for good no matter if its gradual or instant.

3. There is hope: There is definitely light at the end of the tunnel. Though some people who face adversity feel hopeless, it is reasonable to have strong hope for a better tomorrow. God (if you believe him) has promised to make a better future for everyone and He does not lie. So if you can trust what the bible (again if you believe it) says, God has promised that in the near future, there will be no more sorrow, pains and everything that makes us cry. Such bright hope can get us going in times of trouble.

Conclusion

Suicide is not a solution. Some people even view a person that committed suicide as a coward - someone not capable of facing up to their challenges. Whatever the view, just be rest assured that YOU can overcome whatever problems you face though they might seem huge like a mountain. There are definitely more than 3 reasons to keep living and you deserve better than suicide!

Thank you so much. I appreciate the support!

When I'm feeling very gloomy it's usually because I feel alone and that makes me restless. I just try to relax by laying down and listening to some good music (or bad catchy music), I call that ear candy (but if it's also a music video it's eye candy!) Don't worry about what you have to do, what people want you to do or be like. Just relax and do something that YOU want to do. Even though sometimes it's hard to want to do something but deep down everybody has hobbies or things they can do that make them happy. And remember:

YOU ARE LOVED

Not much but hope it helps :)

I personally believe that getting help is the single most important thing that a suicidal person can do. Reaching out may help to restore hope and the belief that things can change. Knowing that they are not alone in their suffering and that people DO care may also help. I don't think anyone should have to suffer alone. Being a human being is hard, but it is easier when we support one another.

Great thought there @akiroq. Accepting help is crucial. Understanding that everyone is involved will go a long way to help the suicidal individual. Though unfortunately, some of them reject or feel that they are beyond help.

@focusnow, Out of three i believe upon 1st and 3rd point because things never remains same because only change is constant in Life.

And next one is hope, this is like invisible ingredient which gives inner strength no matter how much rough our Physical realm is.

Everything has a solution, in life, except death. Every problem, however serious or painful, has an end, it is not eternal. Life is one of the most beautiful things we have and God has a purpose for each one of us.

If you are thinking of suicide, talk to someone, remember that you are not alone and that your side has many people who care about you.

When I was a lad, I thought about this. When I was in a place where I did not see a way out... als thought it was cool... and that last part is just messed up right? Thinking it would be cool to kill ones self... What changed in my mind, well... one day I realized you have 2 main options. 1. lay down and just give up, 2 get up and keep going. I opted for the second. When you are not afraid to lose everything, then you have nothing left to lose, so why not go out and enjoy things more, go on an adventure and see where the wind takes you?

:)

Yes I have and the help is seldom offered.
