Adventures On The Halifax River
The Beautiful Halifax
The Halifax River is not a true river, but is part of the Atlantic Oceans Intercoastal Waterway. This beautiful lagoon is located in northeast Volusia County, Florida. This picture was taken from the South side of the lagoon and you can see Daytona Beach on the other side of the river.
There are many freshwater and saltwater fish species that call the Halifax home. Snorkelers often encounter catfish, sheepshead, tarpon, flounder, black drum, snook, and the red and mangrove snapper. The Halifax River is also a manatee habitat. The manatee are protected in Florida and should not be bothered. It is also not unsual to see dolphins and small groups of sting rays toward the middle. During low tide, you can see the floor of the lagoon clearly and there you will observe many shells walking around. There are many small islands within this large river or lagoon. One is home to hundreds of Pelicans. Just think about coming eye to eye with a large male caring for many nesting females. The males are extremly large but do not seem to be quick to attack.
There is a cove that is almost always filled with small sting rays. These beautiful creatures are norished here until large enough to travel out on the Atlantic. There is yet another island that is covered completely with shells of many different sizes and colors. If you like to hunt for shells, then you will love this small island.
The area around this island is also home to what is called the snake bird. If you are kayaking in the river they often come close to the kayak appearing like a snake and then take flight. This is a beautiful and unique experience. The snake bird is just one of the many amazing sights while on the lagoon.
If a day of river exploration sounds fun, then grab your kayak and head for the Halifax. Be sure to throw your snorkling equipment in the kayak. You never know what you will encounter on the Halifax.

This looks like a very nice place. Kayaking there would be allot of fun.
It is a fun place to kayak. There really is nothing like low tide and looking down and seeing sea shells of all types walking on the floor of the river.
Very nice :-)
Thanks!
