Bargain

in #travel5 years ago

In Germany it is not very usual to bargain about prices. You see how much it costs and you decide if you want to buy it or not.

In many cultures that is different.

In Thailand you can bargain about a lot.

You usually don`t bargain about food but the rest is fair game.

How much to pay for your Hotel if you stay longer, how much you pay for your scooter or cloth and especially how much you pay for your tuk tuk ride.

First it was kind of strange for me to ask for a better price but the more you get used to it and loose a bit of your inhibitions it actually becomes fun.

I still suck at it but as a farang in Thailand you pretty much bound to pay a premium.

What helped me a lot to nagoiate in Bangkok with the Taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers was that I can count in Thai.
Just throwing out a number in Thai got me an adventage.

The most fun and easiest for me it is on the nightmarket though. A market were seemingly everything gets sold. From cloth over food to pets ( by the looks of it they get treated pretty bad and I feel very sorry for them when I walk by ) you can buy and bargain.

It becomes almost like a dance.

"If I take 3 I pay you x"

"I give you 3 for y"

Back and forth till you come to an agreement...or not and try your luck at another vendor.

How about you? Are you used to bargain? How low is your first offer? Do you enjoy it or was it strange for you the first times as well?

Germany is very precise and amazing culture in its own way :)

We have our strenghts I guess

I buy a lot online thus cannot bargain. I spent a month in India and we "walked away a lot" as it get's cheaper if you return after 5 minutes. Same for asking first the price of another article (that you do not want) and then say it is too expensive and then go the the article you want.

Ohhh that is pretty smart with the other article I will try this.

Thx for the tip.

well bargaining is an art too fixed price is something one don't see everywhere

that is a pretty good way to see it. I like that

In my country the offered price is not the final, it is better to bargain so you can get a good discount @flipstar

I still need to practise a bit :-)

You have to do "Trading" in Bangkok apparently. hehehehe

In Venezuela that is not done now, but my mother tells me that that existed many years ago. Maybe now it's not done because of inflation. 🤔
