This MUST Change or Steemit will fail long term
I've been blogging for just a bit of time, but I've noticed something that concerns me...
Are Steemers JUST blogging for the money? Or is there a deeper purpose? I feel that this will be the "downfall" of Steemit if it continues this way. When it becomes less about sharing ones passions, interests, and putting VALUE in the world...
... and more about what can I GET vs. what can I GIVE.
Make sense?
I'd love to see EVERYONE blog about what inspires them. What makes them "tick". What makes them COME ALIVE! But what I often see instead are people doing ANYTHING to get a tip, a resteem, or an upvote. Whether that's:
Recycled Info from the Interwebs
Inauthentic posts that have no passion behind it.
Trolls, posts that they feel people will like vs what THEY like.
Am I off here? Or do you agree?
I envision everyone being motivated to post NOT for the money... that we somehow get paid on the level of "congruency" our posts resonate with our being. I realize this is impossible, but it's my wish. The world is full of garbage. The internet is FULL of crap. I don't want Steemit to be another garbage dump of $hit.
5 Ways To Be The Change, Ghandi Style
Write about things that inspire, challenge, or things you're grappling with internally.
GIVE A DAMN about the content you're posting, and want to talk about it regardless of getting paid or not.
CARE about building community.
Make videos that scare you (like learning a new hobby).
Make this about GROWTH and evolution.
That's all for now, everyone!

I agree with you flexifriday that a fixation on money will corrupt the platform.
On the other hand I am not too worried about it because I actually think the market mechanism will sort this kind of behavior out.
People love to read the words of authors who are genuinely passionate about what they are presenting. That passion does shine through - it is inevitable.
The people who publishes with money as their only motivation cannot compete with the authentic authors and the market will reward them accordingly.
So yes, your message is true, but I think Steemit community will sort out the trolls automatically.
Does it make sense?
ronni
You clearly expressed my thoughts on this @ronni
I think the money part of steemit is a good thing. I like what you said here:
That makes a lot of sense to me and I hope that it will prove true here on steemit.
@ronni I agree. I believe the platform and the steemit community will eventually fix this and reward great content.
I hope so too! What makes "great content" in your opinion? Because if upvoting certain posts (which then make them more popular) is beneficial for the "upvoter", then is that content valuable? Or is there still a motivation to upvote content regardless if you even like it? I'm still new at learning the ins and outs of all this, but what do you think?
Thanks for chiming in, Ronni. Yes it does make sense. And I must remember what I feel looks like "passion" is different than what another does, and that we're all different. So I must put my judgements aside, as that is part of my bias. I'd like to believe that people on Steemit are smarter and more aware than the average Facebooker, so yes, I'd like to have faith too. Thanks!
Great content of course is subjective. But personally, great posts are those that are informative, factual, honest, and entertaining. What I like about steemit so far is that the community as curators generally has consensus of what great content is. At least, for me, the trending post in every category I visited are great and are of quality. :)
A little philanthropy might be needed now and then for something to flourish.
What do you mean by philanthropy, ronni?
Sorry, I just meant to support your comment about having "faith".
philanthropy synonyms: generosity, humanitarianism, public-spiritedness, altruism, social conscience, social concern, charity
So basically having faith in humans
:)

Hey you've hit on a very valid point. I'll be honest with you, I came here because I heard that you could make some money for blogging - I'm no stranger to that & ive written posts with Izea & other content marketing companies in the past.
The difference with Steemit is that I can now be rewarded for my efforts by writing about things I choose to write about. It just for the sake of the money.
Like I mentioned, I came here for the money but I put a lot of effort into creating my content and I've been actively trying to help new (well, newer) members with their questions.
I guess it's all down to the individual. I can see the potential in Steemit and want to advance it in every way I can. There will always be some who are just looking to take.
I think the slogan for this place should be: Come for the money, stay for the community.
Come for the money, stay for the community. Well said.
You may know the answer... some of my earlier posts made like $30, but they have far, far less votes and comments. What makes a post earn money? Is it not just the votes? It's all confusing, really.
I think quality is important but not the absolute determining factor. I've seen some incredible posts that make very little and others that I considered to be terrible make over $100.
All votes are votes but not all votes are equal. Best guess from me is that you caught the right people at the right time in a good mood.
It's really hard to pin down & if I could, man I'd be making some!
Saw a good post earlier about the Pareto principle. It's the old 80/20 rule. 80% of your rewards will come from 20% of your efforts & I tend to agree with it.
My advice is to keep posting decent content (nobody needs to be a Pulitzer Prize candidate or anything) the more you post, the bigger the 20% is.
Helpful, thank you. Yes, and something about people's voting having more weight? SBD? All those terms are confusing. Is there a website that shows how powerful a vote you have?
Welcome to Steemit, @flexifriday!
Hope you enjoy being here!
This message was written by my
introduceyourselfbot.I agree. I resteemed this because it's important.
Good content will probably be rewarded well. I think the money part of steem works fairly well. You don't get rewarded for being a jerk. That's my guess of how it will work out.
However, I agree that honest writing about genuine interests is much better than throwing out posts that the author thinks will make money.
I hope that is how it is, and will continue to work. And that it'll keep being refined in that way. Gave you a follow. Thanks for the resteem.
Yeah this is absolutely true. One should provide quality content rather than focusing on money.thanks!!
Yup, I agree! Gave you a follow too. Keep on blogging on what you love!
Thanks!!!
I totally agree! Blogging the if no of it and getting our message out to the world is the best and the way I think should be. But obviously money is involved to so people will do what they need to do
The irony is that if money wasn't involved, would any of us be here? Few bloggers, or writers, write JUST for the sake of writing. I believe blogging being incentivized will actually help the "non-writer" get out there more, so it's a win-win. Thx.
The added value of steemit is the value distribution and the open source. This is the engine that starts the growth. Once critical mass of traffic will follow the pioneers, the content will be much more diversify, and the value distrebution will happen seemlessly while the social network thrives.
Wow, seems like you have a real understanding about all this.
Well its more wishfull thinking, no one can tell what future holds, this is my perspective. I do feel like you, and I think money in general is a problematic mechanism. Looking at thing from a value perspective makes it friendlier.
I agree. But how does one reward "value" if not monetary? Social recognition? Non monetary prizes? Hmm
I agree it is complex. That is why we should feel ok with the money motivation. Its not ideal but its the most common reward mechanism today.
I think the real game changer is the openness and the value distrebution.
I have one more problem and this is I feel getting addicted to the platform. Some might consider it a good problem.
Hello, @flexifriday. I'm with @ronni on this. Market forces will weed out the poor quality and rehashed stuff while rewarding those who put time, effort and thought into their posts. A bit like milk really, the cream will rise to the top.
One of the reasons I abandoned Facebook and Twitter was because of the garbage that I used to have posted to my feed. Precisely because of the reward and flagging system I'm hopeful that it will not happen on this platform.
Remember you also have the tag and follower system in place to help you only see posts from those you wish to see. I'm currently toying with the idea of having a ruthless cull of my followers as my feed is starting to clog up with posts and I'm missing the some of the good stuff.
Thanks for this post.
It would be nice to only see posts from people you like. Unlike what Facebook has become, or especially Twitter. Both are clogged portals of nonsense. Good analogy about the cream rising.
Thanks for that. Followed you. :-D
right back atcha
Hi, flexi. I've also had that restlessness. This may end up like youtube: full of junk and individuals who share junk. For my part I am here to share my passions, like a little part of people ...
Me to, jorgebit! Let's keep the content at a high level! Gave u a follow. Look forward to seeing your posts!
I. Fucking. Feel . you.
The corny fake attention seeking money hungry mofos migrated to steemit real quick.
They won't last :)
Be the change. I don't follow or upvote anything/anyone i don't 100% believe in. Cheers bro
