Flesh Fly - Sarcophaginae ++ MAGGOTS... LOTS OF MAGGOTS...
The ever present fly is generally considered to be a nuisance yet it has a very important place in nature. The Flesh Fly pictured is so named because its larvae feed on flesh.
The Flesh Fly or Sarcophaginae sub-family contains 28 sub-taxa with a total of 276 species and the Sarcophaga species has the most at 160.
Flesh Flies are scavengers of dead insects and snails or smaller vertebrates and the larvae feed on decaying flesh or carcasses and excrement. A couple of Flesh Flies can lay enough eggs to cover a carcass in a writhing mass of larvae. The life cycle from larvae to adult emergence is relatively short taking just 16-30 days, of which the larvae feed for only 5-10 days.
