Sometimes my own garbage is my own treasure
Or how to conveniently forget to throw something out until I find a use for it.
This looks like a pile of garbage and to most people, including myself for a long while, it is. But yesterday I had "lightning struck my skull" and I realized that this stack of burlap that was wasting away in a pile in the yard has an immediate use. My Beehive Smoker that I just repaired needs a fuel source to start my smoke with and this is the perfect thing.
I plucked it from its "hiding" spot in plain view and took it to the fence line to inspect the bounty.
Flaked out and hung on the fence I finally remembered where I had obtained all the various burlap pieces. In a former life I was a landscaper/warranty&repair/plant doctor for a local landscaping company. One of the duties was to plant B&B (balled and burlapped) trees in customer's yards. The burlap that held the roots and soil together are what this is from. I have had this burlap sitting around for 8 years now and JUST YESTERDAY I figured out a use for it.
The three larger pieces were from large trees and were covered in soil still. The smaller chunks on the left were all dry and mostly free of dirt and debris.
I took the hose to the 3 large pieces and washed out as much of the soil as I could. I don't want a lot of dirt in the burlap since it will be getting burned in the smoker and it will be good to not have even more fine particulate collect in the bottom.
The hot sun did the trick and dried the burlap out nicely. The burlap is now in tubs for storage and ease of access. I don't think I will ever need to get more as this should last me many years and many hive inspections.

You made a good point here that repurposing things that are lying around can really help make life so much easier. Good for you that you were able to use the burlap after having it hanging around for so long. Good post!
