Hi Steemit family!

Meet Petrus Christus

Today we will continue with another of the most representative artists of the Flemish painters, although this in particular is one of the precursors of the Renaissance in Northern clothing, with clear beginnings in Gothic art, this era was characterized by painting symbols and religious icons, and although it is not the only time in the history of art where religious motifs are painted this is based on satires that were misinterpreted and marked negatively by the church. Today it is the turn of Petrus Christus. Come with me to learn more about his life and work.

Petrus Christus, was born in Baarle-Hertog in the year 1420 approximately, near Breda where he lived all his life, from his first steps in painting he managed to assimilate and master Gothic art very well, he spent a time in the city of Bruges where he painted numerous paintings in the style of Van Eyck, including two paintings that ended as St. Jerome and Madonna Rothschild, then followed the same style where he painted some copies and made other works influenced by the painter. Then he traveled to Italy where he was carried away by the style of Antonello da Messina, for those years he made the Virgin with two saints, then returned to his country where he began to follow in the footsteps of Dirk Bouts, Roger van der Weyden and Robert Campin.

His theme is related to religiosity and therefore dedicated to portraits, the magic of this painter to recreate scenes of perfect form, with clear colors, always used a lot of colors in his palette. As he developed his painting, the style and contrast become more established, gaining more strength and having enough maturity and sobriety, we can confirm this with his fame after the death of Jan Van Eyck, as the best master of painting in the city of witches.

Some of his most important works, are San Eloy and "Deposition found in the Metropolitan Museum of New York City, another emblematic painting is the Virgin and Child who are in the Prado Museum in the capital of Spain, the Nativity and two donors in the national gallery of Washington, This particular piece has an intimate meaning for the artist, it is believed that it was a private commission by a devotee or that Petrus Christus himself has already painted for his intimate enjoyment.

As we can see many of the painter's works were to give other corners very far from his hometown, this because the international trade of works of art during the last century increased significantly, in addition the paintings with religious motifs are still today among the most quoted in this world where the works reach quirky levels. Many works of religious content are still in the hands of the Catholic Church, but those of the Flemish period to be painted outside the churches and many of them with satires to the holy seat were bought by private collectors and as expected, the works were changing owners to end up in private collections and some in museums that is almost the same only that the public has a better chance of appreciating these greatness of universal painting.

Petrus Christus died in Bruges in 1473. It was in Bruges that he was able to develop and obtain the title of painter of the city.
