Atari to Join Cryptocurrency Hype and Launch Its Own Token
Now don’t expect Pong, Asteroids, Warlords, or Breakout on the blockchain and to earn Atari coins from your mad skills in said games.
Instead, the legendary game developer and console/computer maker, has licensed its name with a gambling company who will release an own cryptocurrency token for online casinos. Gibraltar based Infinity Works has offered Atari an undisclosed amount of equity, without actual cash exchanges to license the brand’s name.
Infinity Works are developing a decentralized platform for multiple entertainment purposes, ranging from games and movies to online casinos. The Atari token will be used as currency to pay with.
Considering that Atari acquired a stake in Infinity Works, the long-term licensing deal may prove to be a lucrative venture for the game developer, especially given that whit first entry in the world of gambling, there is room for expansion to later also include other retro games.
Additionally, the developer plans to introduce the Pong Token to ignite initial interest in its blockchain and online casino venture. Whether the use of its iconic brands may be hurt by an entry in the gambling sector rests to be seen, but it most definitely is an interesting niche Atari is venturing in.

Yeah take over the arcade industry too! Those physical tokens you use to play those rigged games have value... And traditional arcade games too.

oh so that's the story behind the atari coins. Very interesting, they're just using the name for jumpstarting something else. Seems to be working though, there's a lot of hype already built into it
