My Knife Wish
I do a lot of outdoor survival stuff. Lots of bush crafting. And simply use the same knife for everything from building a shelter in the forest to cutting my steak at the dinner table. By using one knife for all my daily needs I become very attuned to it. My handling of it becomes very efficient and I learn everything possible about the knife. Every grain in the metal, every scratch, where it is best balanced, just how many strokes to perfection of edge with stone, and much more is learned.
This is my current knife and it is by far the best knife I have ever owned:
Gerber Profile Fixed Blade Knife 4" Drop Point 5Cr15MoV Black Stainless Steel Blade Rubber Handle Black
I only wish that I had the skill set or knew someone with the skill set to create the knife of my dreams. The design below is my idea of a perfect knife for my daily needs. One day I hope to get this made...
Full tang, 1 solid flat piece of metal from end to end, not pieced together or rat tailed-
Handle length: 4 ½-5 inches-
Handle sides/skins: something good for sweaty hands and cold wet environments-
Blade length: 3 ½-4 inches-
Chisel tip width: 3/8 inch and sharpened-
Tip of blade should look like a trapezoid with all three sides fully sharpened-
Back side of blade at chisel tip sharpened from tip towards handle 1st ¾ inch only-
(just like this)
Blade should be at least ¼ inch thick or better-
Bearing cup in right side of handle for bow drill, cup width: 1/2 inch-
Straight edge blades only NO serrations-
Should be able to spark-
Pommel end of knife should be flat screw driver head like with rounded corner edges , for prying and 5/8 inch wide dull & stick out from handle about 3/4 inch- (similar to this)
At top of handle on back side of blade needs to be sharply squared for Ferro rod striking-
Sheath preferred: kydex 1st choice, or dark leather 2nd choice-
A good starting point would be this Gerber knife combined with the pry knife and ESEE knife seen below.
Combining these would help create the size, shape, and blade I’m looking for.
I have the esee 5" and I really love it. I wouldnt mind the Esee in 3 or 4". What is it about the chisel tip that you like? I am not familiar with them. Thanks for the positive gerber review. I had considered gerber before but never tried it out.
I do a lot of carving and bush crafting etc... the chisel tip is great for making bowls from wood or notching joints to make cordless structures and so much more. plus it can be used for prying things open and digging. if you know how to use it then you can do all kinds of things with it. i love gerber. there are 3 types of gerber though. 1.) china made, 2.) military usa made, 3.) civilian usa made generally in oregon. i prefer the oregon usa made versions but they cost more. however the gerber profile i think was made in china and only $20 but it has been the best knife ive ever owned and i have 3 of them. i used my first one for nearly 8yrs with no issues. it is my go to knife for everything from bush craft to defense to cutting my food at dinner. the only thing better than the gerber profile in my mind would be my own design :)
Wow! That's a true testament to the gerber profile knife :) Now you got me really interested in trying it haha! Thanks for the info about the chisel tip. Sounds amazing for those type of rough building /carving activities. I'll have to try one out.
i got a brand new gerber prodigy today for my birthday from my mother inlaw. it is pretty cool and very close to what i want. will post a blog on it in a few minutes. hopefully it tunrs out to be as good as my gerber profile :)
I did see your blog post and it looks great! It's officially on my wish list now. What a nice mother in law :)
