Sugarcane Truck Detail Northern Thailand

Sugarcane trucks roared back and forth all night long past the resort I stayed at in Northern Thailand. They mostly travel at night because they are going so fast and with such heavy loads. The regular traffic is much smaller, lighter, and slower during the day. Often one truck pulled two trailers, and you are seeing the rear of one of those trailers in this photo.

This truck was having mechanical trouble, as so was outside the resort for many hours one morning. Several other vehicles and workers came to fix it, but it would only go a few feet and stop again. It was stopped for about 4 hours, so I had plenty of time to get photos.

I really wish I would have had a chance to visit the depot where the cane gets loaded onto the trucks. You can see it is very organized in how they tie off small bundles of cane and stack them just so. The trailers are jam packed with as much cane as can possibly fit.

Cane fields are small in this area, and usually on family property. The cane farmers might be family, or might lease the field. Big companies process the sugar, but mostly do not grow the cane.

Sugar is big business in the US, has price supports, and is a fairly expensive product, especially when organic like I bought it. In Thailand sugar grows easily and the price is not rigged.

Sugar is very cheap there and sold in many forms. I was getting organic brown sugar that was lightly refined and delicious for about one-fifth the price in the states. This was about the most expensive sugar I could buy there. The refined white sugar I did not buy was even cheaper.

I have not bought any sugar now that I am in Malaysia, but it might be cheap here too. They give it away for free in the hostel I am staying at so I think when I find a need to buy it, I will probably still be getting a good deal.
