Freewrite Day 382 Flashlight

I roam around at night and like things to be dark. I know other people who walk at night like me and take flashlights on their nocturnal strolls. This defeats the purpose for me. My eyes adjust and relax, and my head clears. I do not need or want a light. I prefer there to be no moon.

I have been like this all my life, and when I look back at places I’ve been, often the dark nights hold the memories that are clearest. Snow glitters, even with no light.

I can remember a time when I was about 17 and sitting in a dark park alone for a whole night. This is not something I normally do – I am usually walking when I’m out. But this night is memorable for the terrain, the silence, and the peace. If there had been lights there, I would not have been so happy, or be able to go back there in my dreams.

More recently, I took care of a hospice patient for the last weeks of her life. When one of the family members got home each night late, I was off duty for a couple of hours. They had a dark park near them, and I would head off to it as soon as I could.

The man of the house thought this was horribly risky and could not understand why I would do such a thing. He offered me his flashlight that you could wear on your head.

I took it to be nice and left it under a bush a couple houses away each night after that. Then I would put it back in its place when I came in from the dark.
